by

Bob McCauley, CNC, MH

Dr. Joseph Mercola and Dr. T. Colin Campbell, author of the China Study - The Most Comprehensive Study of Nutrition Ever Conducted and the Startling Implications for Diet, Weight Loss and Long-Term Health, have been arguing publicly over whether the vegetarian diet is actually healthy for a person. A vegetarian diet is one in which a person eats no meat at all, and a vegan diet is one where a person does not eat meat, fish, eggs or dairy products. I am currently a vegan and will remain one for the rest of my life. I became a vegetarian in 1980 while traveling in India. I was a vegetarian for 18 years before I became a vegan 13 years ago.

The Wrong Way to Be a Vegan
I believe that Dr. Mercola is completely wrong about the vegetarian diet, which he denounces, and the vegan, which he states is actually dangerous for us. I could not disagree with those sentiments more. Mercola sites the actress Angelia Jolie to support his case that veganism is dangerous for us because she was a vegan for a few years and became quite sick. Another person who claims the same thing happened to him is Daniel Vitalis, the elixir master, who states he was a vegan for five years before his health started to decline and five years later after the same diet he claims nearly killed him. I don’t doubt that it did, nor do I doubt that Angelia Jolie became ill after living on a vegan diet for a few years. There is a right way and wrong way to go on a vegan diet and apparently neither of them did so in the right way.

The Healthy Way to Be Vegan
I am an example of someone who has gone about it in the right way. After 12 years of being on a vegan diet, without any meat, fish, eggs or dairy in my diet, I still run daily, often at a six minute sustained pace. I am a third degree black belt in Tae Kwon Do and still spar quite often. I am 53 (born in 1957) and can outlast anyone in the ring. I am no one special, and I am living proof that a vegan diet is not only healthy, but is indeed the healthiest diet that we can live on, as long as we go about it the right way.

Who Promotes What and Why
Dr. Mercola is 100% wrong in promoting an animal based diet. Dr. Mercola sells ostrich meat, salmon, buffalo, as well as fish oil and krill oil for the omega 3 fatty acids it contains, which is also unnecessary in my opinion because these fatty acids can easily be found in the plant world. Dr. Mercola believes that only “high quality” meat and fish that have not been factory farmed should be consumed. I have nothing against him selling any of these things because I think it is an extension of what he believes. However, I have seen people such as David Wolfe interviewing him and referring to him as some sort of health guru when they should be taking him to task for his promotion of animal consumption. David Wolfe is a vegan and it is my opinion that when it comes to such a fundamental principle, such as whether it is healthy to eat animal products, it does not suffice to simply say that we will agree to disagree.

Why Meat Kills
The reason that eating animal protein is one of the worst things for our health is simple. First, we should establish that everyone always cooks their animal protein. Rarely does anyone eat raw meat, fish, eggs or dairy, although there is a strong movement to consume raw dairy, in particular raw goat’s milk. I am not against this, but it certainly is not necessary for us to consume if we wish to be healthy. The problem with animal protein is that it is a pre-formed protein chain of amino acids that are then brought to high temperatures during the cooking process. The higher the temperature and the longer the animal protein is cooked at these temperatures, the more harmful the animal protein becomes to our health. Although it is not desirable, exposing plant proteins (unstructured amino acids) to high temperatures does not have the same deleterious effects on our health.

The Raw Paleo-Diet
Around 1900 – 1910, the latest health fad to sweep through Europe and the United States was the Raw Milk Cure. People found that if they began consuming fresh raw cow’s milk, they felt better and their health improved. Eating raw, organic meat, fish, eggs or dairy products is not harmful to our health, although I do not believe they are necessary for good health and are not required unless no other protein source is available. Eating raw animal protein from a commercial size factory-farm could potentially be detrimental to our health.

The Flaw in the China Study
The China Study by Dr. Campbell is easily one of the best books I have read on the subject of health and vegetarianism. It is one of the few books on health I have read twice. It is a comprehensive study, the most comprehensive controlled study in history, and it demonstrates beyond any doubt that those who live on a meat-based diet have far greater incidences of serious health problems such as heart disease, stroke and cancer. When I first read it, I was amazed to see in print what I had been saying for over 20 years, that removing meat from your diet leads to an overall healthier life. However, where the China Study falls short is in suggesting protein sources other than fish, eggs and dairy products. Nor does it attempt to determine whether there is a difference in health if we eat our vegetables cooked or uncooked.

Why They are Both Wrong
And this is why Dr. Mercola and Dr. Campbell are both wrong, although for different reasons. I am amazed that anyone in the “natural health movement”, which Dr. Mercola purports himself to be, would even consider promoting animal protein as a primary food source. I believe those that do so are sadly mistaken and are unwittingly misleading people. Dr. Jordan Rubin, Garden of Life, told me that it was important that we have meat in our diet. When I asked him why, he claimed it was because meat contains the amino acid L-Carnine, which does not stand up to scrutiny. Our bodies are capable of producing L-Carnine, therefore it is not essential, meaning that it must be consumed because our bodies cannot produce it. There are only eight essential amino acids that our bodies cannot produce. In fact, there is nothing in meat that cannot be obtained in other foods. The only reason to eat animal protein at all is for the taste. Meat, for instance, is only about 20% protein on average. The other 80% of meat is essentially useless to the body since it is sinew, tendons and fat.

The Raw Food Diet
Dr. Campbell is wrong to promote a vegetarian diet without suggesting an alternative protein source other than soy, which is terrible for our health. Anyone moving to a vegetarian or vegan diet without adding an alternative protein source is eventually going to become ill, such as the case with Angelina Jolie and Daniel Vitalis, who lived primarily on fruit during his 10 years of veganism. The Hygienists movement heavily promotes the consumption of fruit and are virulently opposed to consuming algae, which is why I have benighted them the food-nazis of the raw food movement.

Algae: The Perfect Protein Source
Now that I have soundly denounced the consumption of any kind of cooked animal protein, the question must be asked as to where we should get our protein. The answer is from algae, Chlorella and Spirulina, which are 60% protein with 18 different amino acids in them that are in the correct ratio to one another. Animal protein contains high amounts of some amino acids while others barely register. It is this uneven amino acid compliment that makes animal food a poor choice for a protein base. The notion that poultry is a superior food to red meat is a myth in my opinion. For instance, chicken has 15 times the amount of methionine, a sulfur-based amino acid, than beef. This is why you begin to smell like sulfur if you eat a lot of eggs since they contain even higher amounts of sulfur. There are thousands of different kinds of algae that have been identified. Spirulina, a blue-green algae and Chlorella, a green algae, are the healthiest and easiest to grow. A person of any age could live exclusively on Chlorella and/or Spirulina and be perfectly healthy. Essentially, there are no side effects, although both are extremely detoxifying, which some mistake as side effects.

I have been consuming both Spirulina and Chlorella for 14 years without any animal protein in my diet. I have high amounts of energy, I am able to perform athletically better than I have for most of my adult life. Another claim made by opponents of the vegan diet is that Vitamin B12 cannot be absorbed from plant sources such as algae. Once again, I have had my vitamin B12 levels measured several times and they are fine. The body is capable of manufacturing vitamin B12. Probiotics stimulate the production of all the B vitamins.

Bob McCauley, CNC, MH

. . . doesn’t mean you’re healthy. In fact, no one older ever does. The idea that someone dies of old age is just a way of saying that there is no telling what killed that person exactly because essentially some and then all of their organs stopped working. This happens because disease has long ago entered their bodies and has destroyed them. It is the inevitable result of living on a cooked food diet, especially a diet that is highly acidic, such as processed and fried foods.

One of the common refrains I hear is that they know someone who ate junk foods and/or smoked their whole life and lived to be 98. Perhaps they were never ill until the final months of their lives. Why someone who never smoked dies of cancer at 25 years old and someone who smokes lives to be 98 is not really a mystery if we were to look at their lifestyles in its entirety, including whether they had a positive or negative attitude, or if they were a spiritual or religious by nature. My old friend and mentor Jack Lalanne died in January 2011 and I wrote that he only lived to 96 years old because he was only on a 70% raw food diet and the 30% of his diet that was not comprised of raw fruits and vegetables was acidic and what inevitably lead to his demise.

The Oldest Woman in the World died recently. She was confined to her bed for several years, which doesn’t sound like much of a life to me. My 7 Component Health Protocol is more about quality of health today rather than longevity, living a long life. For without quality of health what is life worth? If you can’t get out of bed for years, what kind of life do you have? We hear all the time that modern medicine has extended the life expectancy by 15 years in the last 50 years, and that people are living long lives each and every year. While that is true, what is the quality of their health and therefore their lives in those final years? I would rather live 50 years with quality health than to live 100 years and suffer the misery of incessant disease.

No one wants to live to be 100 years old because everyone they see who is 100+ is decrepit. However, if you woke up on your 100th birthday and felt great, jumped out of bed and said “I’ve got lots to do today so I better get moving” you would relish the thought of living to 100+ years. We live with the perception that old is good when in fact that living to an old age is worthless without quality of health. And we live with the idea that aging and becoming decrepit is inevitable, when it is the result of what we put in our bodies, which in the end is our choice. ”We are all the author of our own health or disease.” ~ Buddha

For the record, Chlorella does have vitamin K in it, as do all green plants to some degree. Vitamin K is found in a plethora of foods. Chlorella has a lot of vitamin K, 46mg per 1 gram. The body requires vitamin K for a number of reasons. It is an antagonist for arterial calcification in humans. A ten-year study documented that people who consumed the most vitamin K2 have a 50% reduced risk of arterial calcification. They also exhibited a 50% reduction for being at risk for cardiovascular events during the 10 year period of the study. In 2009, a 16,000-person study demonstrated that high consumption of vitamin K2, not vitamin K1, protected from cardiovascular disease. Continue reading →

Bob McCauley, CNC, MH

One of the most common questions we are asked about Chlorella is whether it has vitamin K. In 2009, a 16,000-person study demonstrated that high consumption of vitamin K2, not K1, protected from cardiovascular disease. Vitamin K also helps with calcium assimilation and retention in the bones and throughout the body. It helps prevent osteoarthritis and is essential for the production of skin cells.

The main function of vitamin K is that is allows the blood to coagulate so we do not bleed to death when we get cut. Newborn babies are given a shot of vitamin K when they are born for this reason, although I believe them to be unnecessary if my health protocol would be followed for the mother through pregnancy. And it is for this reason that people are prescribed the drug Coumadin, which is said to prevent strokes, heart attack, deep vein thrombosis, blood clots to the lungs, and other circulatory disorders. Doctors prescribe Coumadin to shift the balance away from clot formation in the body and toward increased circulation. It is a blood thinner that causes an imbalance in the body, as do all medications which is why they all have side effects. The normal functions of the body and the way it handles vitamin K becomes a major issue because Coumadin causes imbalances. Under normal circumstances, the body handles vitamin K quite well. However, once an artificial substance such as Coumadin is introduced, one of the most important nutrients required by the body must be avoided, that of chlorophyll, the life-blood of plants. Avoiding foods with Vitamin K means avoiding foods with chlorophyll, which is insanity.

Coumadin thins the blood and guards against blood clots that can lead to a stroke. Since Coumadin does what it is designed to do, it is blindly accepted by the medical community as well as anyone who believes in medicine and the drugs that doctors push on us. We are force fed the notion we should take drugs and that medicine is the only answer, which in fact is the exact opposite of the desired outcome. Drugs create imbalances in the body that in turn no longer allow us to consume other foods that may interfere with it, even those such as Chlorella that encourage sugar level stability and blood consistency. Hypertension, or thin blood, is the most common of all diseases. All drugs interfere with the body’s natural processes and Coumadin is a glaring example of it. Dr. Bernard Jensen, the Father of Nutrition, warned against taking Coumadin in the 1970′s when it was first marketed.

I personally know almost nothing about medicine and medications so I cannot make a recommendation to you about whether you should take medicine that has been proscribed to you by a doctor. That is your decision. However, what I do understand is health, which has nothing to do with medicine. And I can say without any doubt that I would never put anything in my body that would stop me from consuming foods whose nutrients are required by the body if we expect to be healthy, such as those with chlorophyll. This of course would include the most powerful food on earth, Chlorella. Chlorella gets its name for being the food with the highest concentration of chlorophyll, our most important nutrient. Caution to those who would take anything that would deny the body that key nutrient.

Dr. Young's words are in italics. "Meat has no nutritional value other than to just destroy you life." "[Eating meat is] why most people stink. That's why they have body odor. That's why their elimination smells . . . You can smell someone that's a meat eater. You can just look at their eyes and at their skin."

I have not consumed meat since 1980 and it is something I definitely tell people not to eat meat, fish, eggs or dairy. But I think Dr. Young goes too far in suggesting that there is no nutrition in meat whatsoever and the reason why people smell so much. Meat may be one of the contributing factors, but I have met vegetarians who smell bad themselves, including their breath. He suggests that meat actually causes people to rot from within. The consumption of cooked animal protein leads to more disease than anything other than not drinking enough water. But it's not as bad as Dr. Young makes it sound. Continue reading →

Bob McCauley, CNC, MH

Dr. Robert O. Young wrote the book pH Miracle, which I wrote a rebuttal to. He was interviewed by Kevin Giani.

The interview can be seen here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sRhCVUFbNTM&feature=channel. In the beginning of the interview Dr. Young talks about the detrimental effects of consuming meat and how it should be avoided.

Dr. Young’s words are in italics. “Meat has no nutritional value other than to just destroy you life.” “[Eating meat is] why most people stink. That’s why they have body odor. That’s why their elimination smells . . . You can smell someone that’s a meat eater. You can just look at their eyes and at their skin.”

I have not consumed meat since 1980. Absolutely, I suggest to people that they do not to eat meat, fish, eggs or dairy. But it’s not as bad as Dr. Young makes it sound.

“It’s probably the worst of all the foods one can eat.” Perhaps Dr. Young has never been introduced to a Twinkie, Cheese Puffs or the myriad number of other processed junk foods that the average person commonly eat everyday. I would consider many of them much worse than meat.

Dr. Young continues: “In fact a lot of times the people who eat meat start looking like the animals they’re eating. Because there’s an intelligent there, matter, that actually starts shifting, you know, the animals they eat many times they become.”

It’s a mystery as to what Dr. Young is suggesting as to how a person begins to look like the animals they eat, whether it is fish or a chicken or a cow. I call on Dr. Young to defend this non-scientific, preposterous idea with some kind of evidence in the way of a study or at least a scientific hypothesis.

The sarcastic tone of Dr. Young is palpable throughout the video: “Get off your lazy ass and start moving it. You ever heard of exercise? You know?”

Dr. Young continues: “Maybe eating more green foods and drinking more green drinks.” I couldn’t agree more with this statement since chlorophyll is our most important nutrient in my opinion. Unfortunately Dr. Young does not include aglae as one of the healthy green foods. In fact, it’s his Biggest Mistake.

Around 4:55 in the video, Dr. Young begins talking about mushrooms and algae and it’s all downhill from there. “Think about it folks. Algae and fungi, where do you find them, under rotting decay and bodies. In stagnant, poisonous, toxic lakes. It’s whole purpose is to breakdown dead bodies. And when you put algae and fungus and bacteria, what we call healthy bacteria probiotics all you do is take one step closer to the grave.”

We feed and encourage disease of every kind when our digestive tract is void of probiotics. Dr. Young is suggesting here that the friendly bacteria we call probiotics (for life), commonly Acidophilus and bifidus, also causing us to decay from within. There certainly are harmful bacteria, but to make the blanket statement that all bacteria are harmful to our health is completely wrong, as ample scientific evidence and studies unmistakably proves otherwise.

Dr. Young continues: “What we need is more light, not biological transformations that are essential to life to breaking down dead bodies so they can go back to from whence they came so can be part of some organized matter. . . . you take days, months, years off your life when you start consuming these things.”

Equating yeast, mold and fungus with algae is Dr. Young’s Biggest Mistake. Yeast and mold are recycling instruments used by nature that are commonly found in a diseased body. When nature discovers something that does not belong in it, nature’s processes immediately attempt to re-fold it back into itself so it will again become part of it. Algae is a green food in the Plantae Kingdom. It is a plant, the oldest on the planet, that depends on sunlight to survive and reproduce itself. Fungus, mold and yeast are not plants. They belong in the Fungi Kingdom and do not require sunlight, nor do they produce chlorophyll. They are recycling agents meant to return things to nature that are no longer a part of it. You will find mold and fungus in cancer patients because they are being recycled back into nature because cancer is not a part of nature, but rather a response to something found outside of nature.

Dr. Young continues: “When you look at an electron micrograph of lung cancer you see algae(s) and mushrooms. That’s what the tissues looks like, under the sea, you know, Disney Land, you see all these carbunculars and algae and fungi.”

Once again, Dr. Young claims algae is a recycling agent when in fact some species are the most powerful foods known, as such spirulina and chlorella. They are the most scientifically researched foods in nature. Unlike any other food, both must accompany a Certificate of Analysis with each batch that the producer sells. There is no other food on the market that a COA must be presented with other than herbal extracts. No other food is so rigorously and thoroughly tested in studies than spirulina and chlorella. Only cracked cell chlorella can be imported and sold in the United States, and the processing methods must be approved by the FDA. No other foods are so closely scrutinized by the FDA than these two foods.

In regards to mushrooms, some varieties have incredible health properties such as Shiitake, Reishi, Maitake, Cordyceps, Enoki, Antrodia camphorata to name a few. Many of them have powerful anticancer and immune building properties. I regularly consume mushroom and find nothing wrong with them at all.

Yet they are denounced and ridiculed as agents of decay and disease for those who dare consume them. Dr. Young’s biggest blunder occurs with his denunciation of the most powerful foods on earth. It’s not the first time he has made this mistake and I’m sure it’s not the last.

by Bob McCauley

Mucuna is my favorite herb because it is one of the most powerful and useful herbs known. Mucuna Pruriens is an herb that contains L-Dopa, an amino acid that is often prescribed to Parkinson’s Disease patients since it helps with neurological issues. L-Dopa helps produce dopamine in the brain, which is a mood elevator and where we get the word ‘dope’ from. More importantly, L-Dopa produces Human Growth Hormone (HGH) in the brain. HGH is the number one thing we require if we expect to remain young and vibrant, therefore it becomes increasingly important as we age. HGH is primarily produced by the pineal gland in the brain, however, by 50 years of age the average person has stopped producing it. Angstrom Indium is useful for the pineal gland, which is itself the key to longevity. Chlorella Growth Factor (CGF or Chlorella Extract) contains high amounts of nucleic acids that are the blue prints to the cells. Without them, the cell cannot replicate itself properly and evermore diminished copies of our cells are produced.

Mucuna also stimulates the production of melatonin and serotonin which are both necessary for sleep regulation. These brain chemicals are also produced in the pineal gland. As we age, they are produced less and less, which is why some elderly people get up quite early in the morning and can’t go back to sleep. Brain chemicals are the key to a good night’s sleep and the keys to a youthful life at any age. I take one tablespoon of Mucuna in evening just before I go to bed because that is when the body produces HGH and other brain chemicals such as melatonin.

My hair started turning back to black about one month after I started taking it. Angstrom Copper helps with gray hair reversal as well.

Here are Mucuna Powder with 15% concentrated and Mucuan with Chlorella.

More about my book, Honoring the Temple of God. http://ow.ly/vfWL

We need to accept responsibility for whether we are healthy or sick because it is the result of our diet and lifestyle. It has nothing to do with the disease that run in our family because disease do NOT run in families. They are due to family members living on the same basic diet. If we are sick, we have dishonored the temple that God has given us by putting foods into it that have been cooked or processed.

In my book, Honoring the Temple of God – A Christian Health Perspective, I tell you exactly what you need to do if you expect to be healthy

Disease is opportunistic and as it flourishes in the body, it creates a more acidic environment in order to spread further until it consumes the entire body.

Disease is essentially a mechanism that nature uses to recycle something that is no longer a part of itself. All chronic disease is unnatural and a result of the wrong diet. It has nothing to do with genetics as we are led to believe. Chronic disease destroys what is natural, therefore it is a result of unnatural circumstances. In this case, it is the result of the foods and liquids we naively consume.

When we consume substances that toxify our body, we are in fact defiling our own temple. It’s as though we are walking upon the cleanest floor with dirty, muddy, greasy boots instead of clean sandals. The body is a living temple of God, not just flesh and bone that we own and therefore can treat any way we want to. On the contrary, we must remember that we are purchased at a price [1 Corinthians 6:19-20].

If you are sick with any disease you also know that you are toxic because disease lives on toxins. In the absence of toxins, disease cannot exist in the body. If you are healthy your body will not contain substances that do not belong in it. Anything that does not perform a useful function in the body should be regarded as a toxin that needs to be removed. The body, our temple, is only truly glorious when it is free of toxins. Toxins turn the body into a garbage hull. A temple free of toxins is a disease-free temple. Disease is a symptom of not honoring what God has given us. A diseased body is a testament to our transgressions against God’s living temple.

Honoring the Temple of God.

We are under the false impression that health is complex and therefore must be beyond our grasp. Many of us believe we are eating healthily when in fact we are not. Faux health is feeling good while living with the knowledge that you are declining and it is only a matter of time before disease invades your body. Health is simple to understand, but it is not easy to follow.

He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak. Isaiah 40:29 [NIV]
We must control our appetite for the foods and tastes we crave and have become accustomed to eating over many years. We must not do this for ourselves, but for God and the glorification of His temple, our body.

His word, prayer, meditation, reading scripture, service and work. For a believer, a day spent earnestly working is a day spent with God. The environment for that is best created when we live in the now, the present moment and when we live in a way that does not invite disease.

I will be blogging about my book: Honoring the Temple of God – A Christian Health Perspective, (pub. date 06/06/2008) for the next several months in an effort to get feedback on the book. HTG is a seemingly radical approach to natural health from the viewpoint of what the average person eats. However, what is truly radical is how we eat our way to disease day in and day out and then want to blame it on “life” or other “circumstance” beyond their control. The disease they have “happened to them” and where the responsibility lies is anywhere but with themselves. Nothing could be further from the truth. Everyone is the author of their own health or disease. Most of us would consider this a radical idea, but the truth is that if you are sick it is exclusively the result of your lifestyle you have led and the foods you have put into your body. What we consume accumulates either into health or disease. You, and only you, are responsible your own health. If you find yourself with any kind of disease of any kind it is because you have not honored the temple that God has given you.

My book, HTG, lays out exactly how we get disease in the first place, what we can do to avoid and what we should do if we do get sick. My seven component health protocol explains my entire philosophy regarding health. I’ll also introduce you to my Beginner to Master (Copper to Diamond) step by step progression toward incredible health, the kind of health most people only can dream of.

“Jesus speaks of the body as being the living temple of God and refers to his own body as a temple. His words are misunderstood, as was much of his message to those who lived in those times. The Bible states that health and wellness is found with God. If your body is full of disease it is because of the choices you have made. All disease comes from our diet. Our genes have nothing to do with whether we get sick or not. Disease does not run in our families due to genetics, but rather dietary habits that tend to lead to many of the same diseases.”

My health protocol is simple to understand, but parts of it are difficult to adhere to completely. However, I break it down into simple, understandable steps so that the average person do it if they are determined.

The Watershed Wellness Center, originally The Watershed, began in the bottled water business in 1993. Owner, Bob McCauley, CNC, MH, has written four books on natural health. They include Confessions of a Body Builder, Achieving Great Health, The Miraculous Properties of Ionized Water and Honoring the Temple of God – A Christian Health Perspective. WWC has become one of the largest importers of water ionizers and chlorella in the United States. Bob McCauley is a pioneer the water ionizer industry, having written the definitive book on ionized water.

McCauley is a vegan (someone who does not eat any meat, fish, eggs or dairy products) who promotes the use of spirulina and chlorella for our protein instead of animal sources. Spirulina and Chlorella are the most powerful superfoods known. They are complete foods with protein, carbohydrates and fat that are the most nutrient dense foods known. They also have the broadest array of nutrients of any foods.

In 15 years of service, the WWC has labored hard to bring awareness about ionized water, spirulina and chlorella to the average person who may or may not be interested in natural health. The WWC also promotes angstrom minerals, probiotics and herbal extracts. They also encourage that people move to a diet consisting mainly of raw fruits and vegetables. “The Body is Capable of Healing Any Disease” is the mantra they have operated by for all years they have been in business.

The WWC is located in Lansing, MI. Their website is www.watershed.net. They can be contacted at info@watershed.net or call 1-888-826-4448.
