We often hear that zinc is required by men and iron by women. This is only partially true
since the human body requires both for a number of functions in the body. Men and women need zinc and iron, but for different reasons and in different amounts. Women require iron since they have blood loss each month due to their menstrual cycle. Men require zinc for the prostate health and to maintain adequate testosterone levels in the body.
Uses for Zinc in the body:
- Boosts Sexual Health and Testosterone Levels
- Reduces Risk of Prostate problems
- Minimizes Cold Symptoms
- Helps Fight Acne
- Helps prevent Hair-loss
- Immune System
- Cell Repair
High in Zinc: Sesame Seeds, Pumpkin Seeds, Squash Seeds, and Peanuts.
Uses for Iron in the body:
- Iron at the center of each red blood cell in the body
- Hemoglobin formation
- Oxygen carrier
- Muscle function
- Brain function
- Iron deficiency
High in Iron: Dark green leafy vegetables, such as spinach, chlorella, spirulina; fruit such as raisins and apricots.
You should NOT worry about getting too much iron and having it build up in your liver and/or other organs unless you are taking synthetic iron supplements. Those can be dangerously toxic if taken over a long period of time. However, it is not at all a concern if you are eating whole foods such as Chlorella, Spirulina or spinach for example.
