Hoax Chlorella Cryptomonadales

By Dr. Bob McCauley

An algae product known as Cryptomonadales is grown in Taiwan and marketed throughout Asia, Australia and North America.  The claims made about this strain of chlorella, such as how it is grown and what strain it actually is, are ridiculous.   The algae that they say is grown is a strain known as Chlorella sorokiniana, which is named after the researcher who discovered it, Constantine Sorokin.

Chlorella sorokiniana is a thermopilic algae that thrives in warm water at temperatures of 100 – 107 degrees F (40 – 42 degrees C).  Most Chlorella strains are grown at much lower temperatures, around 55 – 80 degrees F (15 – 22 degrees C).  The biggest problem with Chlorella are the pheophorbides, an derivative of chlorophyll, chemical structures that are dangerous to our health if consumed in large quantities.  Pheophorbides must be controlled during the spray drying process.  Measured in milligrams as a percent of the food per grams with 60mg/100 grams being the limit allowed by law. Watershed Chlorella has a level of 27 – 30 mg pheophorbides.  Some Chlorella producers have over 180 mg pheophorbides, well over the maximum allowable contamination level.  Therefore, this chlorella cannot be sold for consumption alone but must be combined with other algae such as Spirulina in order to bring the pheophorbide to acceptable levels.  More than 50 chlorella companies in Taiwan went out of business in the 1970’s and 80’s because they could not control the Pheophorbide levels in the chlorella they were producing.

Chlorella pyrenoidosa contains Alpha Linolenlic Acid (ALA), another PUFA that that is an essential nutrient, meaning that it is required by body and must be consumed since the body cannot produce it.

Cryptomonadales claim:Peroxisome Proliferator Activated Receptors Crypto Power™ Chlorella Cryptomonadales® Chlorella Sorokiniana The only known algae in the world containing significant amounts of all three naturally occurring Alpha, Beta, and Gamma PPARs.”

Chlorella - Nutritional Analysis - Spec Sheet-page-001Chlorella sorokiniana contains both ALA and Beta linolenic acid (BLA), however only spirulina has gamma linolenic acid (GLA).  The claim by the producers of cryptomonadales that they have combined Chlorella sorokiniana with Spirulina plantenis into one strain of algae is completely false because this is simply not possible.  Spirulina is not an algae, but rather a cyanobacteria (blue bacteria) that is both animal and vegetable since it exhibits both characteristics regarding its biological classification. The blue in spirulina is phycocyanin, a powerful antioxidant.  Phyco means algae and cyanin means blue.  But Spirulina does not have a nucleus and therefore cannot be classified a plant and why it is classified as a cyanobacterium, or blue bacteria.

The reason this is important is because we know that it is impossible to cross a plant with WWC_Spirulina-Spec_Sheet-INGREDIENTSan animal, in this case a bacteria with an algae.  It would be like crossing a dog with a strain of corn.  There has been speculation that they have gene-spliced these two together, fusing them into a new species.  If that is true then it is a result of genetic modification (GMO), commonly known as franken-food because it is a food that has been tinkered with by man.  When man tinkers with nature rather than mold it to his benefit, things tend to go wrong.   That is meaning of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, that tinkering with nature will result in a catastrophe.

What the producers of cryptomonadales fail to produce is a Certificate of Analysis (COA).  A COA is provided with every batch of chlorella and spirulina that is produced. Algae products are not permitted to be sold without a COA, which is true of Herbal Extracts such as Ginkgo Biloba.   I would never purchase and/or sell a chlorella that did not have a COA and complete nutritional analysis such as this one.  Chlorella and Spirulina companies routinely refuse to offer a COA to the public, which is unfortunate since it is the COA that the algae industry rests its case on.  In the case of cryptomonadales it is even more imperative that a COA is offered to anyone who asks for it since they claim to have created a whole new strain of algae.  Until now, they have refused to release a COA of cryptomonadales.  And just to be clear, an analysis of what nutrients are in cryptomonadales is not a COA.  A COA must  be attached to a particular batch of algae that is produced and when it was produced.

The producer does not sell cryptomonadales® Chlorella Sorokiniana in powder form, which is quite odd since many people prefer to take chlorella and Spirulina in powder form rather than tablets.  If they were to release cryptomonadales in powder form their product could be analyzed and evaluated by a third party such as the Japan Food Research Laboratories, Tokyo, Japan, one of several companies capable of conducting such an objective, independent and reliable analysis.

My opinion is that Cryptomonadales® Chlorella Sorokiniana is a combination of Chlolrella sorokiniana and Spirulina plantenis, separate powders in tablet form and not a new strain of algae as the producers claim.  Spirulina must be combined with Chlorella sorokiniana in order to bring the pheophorbides down to acceptable levels, below 60mg/100 gram.  However, we don’t know what those levels are because they won’t publish their COA.  Other than the complete array of PUFAs and PPARs (alpha, beta and gamma linenloic acids), Cryptomonadales does not have much of an advantage over other forms chlorella such as Chlorella pyrenoidosa and Chlorella vulgarius. I want to be clear that I have nothing against Cryptomonadales® Chlorella Sorokiniana.  It is a good health product to consume, but the producers are misrepresenting what it is and how it is produced.  They are being deliberately deceptive about their own product in order to sell more of their product and market it as being the latest technology and innovations in the world of health.  The truth is that this kind of deliberate misrepresentation is hurting the algae industry because it causes confusion. My question is that why is there has not been more calls from within the scientific community

I invite them to provide the world with evidence that they have indeed created a new strain of algae by combining a bacterium (Spirulina) with a plant (Chlorella).  Until now, they have offered no scientific or photographic evidence that their claims are indeed true.  Therefore, the untenable claims made by the producers of Cryptomonadales are perpetrating a hoax by claiming that they have invented a new strain of algae in my opinion.

  3. I have a complete COA done by an independent lab in the USA, with the powder we sell.
Your article is misleading at best. Cryptomonadales is the only chlorella produced in Taiwan that has 3 separate health food certifications. If it was dangerous or a GMO as you suggest it would have been banned in Europe long ago and prohibited by the FDA in the USA.

  5. Merrill says:

I’ve been taking chlorella for a of years. My usual brand is Chlorella Pyrenoidosa sold under Ultimate Superfoods Chlorella Tablets. Recently I purchased another brand that is produced by the Taiwan Chlorella Manufacturing Company. Doing a little research on the Taiwan Chlorella Manufacturing Company’s website I discovered that the tablets they manufactured were not Chlorella Pyrenoidosa but Chlorella Sorokiniana. When I googled “Chlorella Sorokiniana” I found links to cryptomonadales crypto power Chlorella Sorokiniana. I thought that the Taiwan Chlorella Manufacturing Company was one of the oldest and largest producers of chlorella in the world. Now I’m really confused about Chlorella Pyrenoidosa and Chlorella Sorokiniana. Any help would be greatly appreciated before I have to purchase my next batch of chlorella ………….. Thanks!!!

This blog is completely misleading. I have witnessed the benefit of Cryptomonadales and also many other peoples. For Merrill, keep taking your Chlorella Sorokiniana, it does good to your health. Contact me for sharing the benefit of Chlorella Sorokiniana at d_stormchaser[at]yahoo.com

    Hi Bob!
As a Medical Doctor, I would professionally say you are wrong.

I went to Taiwan 2009, as a Bonafide Physician if 20+ years to discuss with the Medical Director of Research at Taiwan Unversity, Dr. Su and observe the procedures of the manufacturer, Prof. Wang.
It is my belief I should see for myself and scrutinize the research done if I would prescribe a product to my cases of “life and death” situation.

What they are doing is a benefit to society.
Please do not let your bias cloud your opinion.
That is how the Pharisees of old gave judgment to ideas new to them.

All spirulina and chlorella producers are a benefit to society. But the ones that are not honest about what their product is – stating that they crossed green algae with a cyanobacteria – is not a benefit to anyone. This producer has a good product, but hey are misrepresenting their product, and that is not a benefit to society and algae producers at large.

It sounds like you are the biased party in this case.

I have been taking Cryptonadales for 3 years now,and i found out about it through a Clinical nutritionalist here in Australia. I feel fantastic.
Macacualy doesn’t know what he is talking about. When we speak of Clinical trials there are heaps that have been done and have proved the benefit of Cryptomadales ppars Search the net dumbcoffs and see how this true health product relates to all degenerative disease from diabetes to cancers..The prob;em with Western medicine is this………The reason why western medical practioners sometimes doubt true natural
discoveries is that they are all believe in pharmacutical remedies, and western scientists can’t wait to get a hold of something like this and make it synthetic, that’s what causes problems. The fact that they can’t stand the fact that this miracle product was not found by western medicine peevs the western detractors off to no end.

Note that in this infomation age we all live in we are dying of degenerative diseases, not infectious diseases.
There is a marked difference.Degenerative disease is caused by simply the types of food we eat,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,Most westerners eat processed food and our treatments are all pharmacutically treated, which is devastingingly dangerous to the human body if taken over years.Disaeses like cancer,Heart diseses, diabetes and all other degenreative disease is simply caused from years and years of eating processed junk…..The primary western diet. The Asian or japanese and to a degree the european type diets are healthly and more alkalyine in nature. This is the secret plus nutritional supplemention like cryptomondales is the key to real health.

By the way Maculey have you taken cryptomondales ? I am on the cryptomonadales with Resveratrol.
So i am taking the product not just talking about it.So i can say i know a little more about the results than you do……Keep eating your Kentucky fried…..Ha!

I myself is taking Cryptomonadales PPARs from Taiwan and it gives me and my diabetic family an excellent results. Everyone in the family is taking it from age 1 to age 69. Being blessed with the superb product i decided to post and sell it in the net.

Here in Philippines we have many doctors now who is prescribing the product and of course before they prescribe it they do their own research first and make sure it is safe. Dr. Bien is one of the very first batch of doctors who visited the plantation and scrutinized the products scientific evidences and studies.

Cryptomonadales PPARs doesn’t need to prove anything here it is actually proven and effective HIGHLY POSSIBLE SOLUTION TO INCURABLE DISEASES. Cheers!

Please verify the source of information on the following:
    1) Cryptomonadales claim: “Peroxisome Proliferator Activated Receptors Crypto Power™ Chlorella Cryptomonadales® Chlorella Sorokiniana The only known algae in the world containing significant amounts of all three naturally occurring Alpha, Beta, and Gamma PPARs.”

I do not think this is the manufacturer’s claim.

2)The claim by the producers of cryptomonadales that they have combined Chlorella sorokiniana with Spirulina plantenis into one strain of algae

I do not think this is the Manufacturer’s claim.

Based on what you have written and my personal experience with the products and the manufacturer, I believe you have made several mistakes pertaining to your understanding of what Cryptomonadales is. If it is a hearsay, from sources other than the manufacturer, you should at least exercise certain level of professionalism with regards to what you have written here. At least make an attempt to communicate with the manufacturer, and clarify your doubts before passing sweeping judgements, which nothing less than defamatory at this point.

  13. Janet Borja says:

Just for your info Bob, Taiwan Cryptomonadales you are talking about is with Halal Certified as well as GMP Certificate. Here in Philippines it is BFAD approved and with Certificate of Product Registration which you can not just get it the product is fictitious. And of course before you can be certified, they will conduct various test and thorough analysis and investigation.

Please do your research again and if your trying to sell your product in this manner it’s so shameful and unprofessional.

    Thanks!

  14. Hans Vincent says:

To tell you frankly Mr. Bob, your article is SENSELESS… I don’t know where the hell in the world did you get you data and what ridiculous purpose you have in mind in writing this article but I know that your data are insubstantial… I have to to agree with Ms. Janet that cryptomonadales is approved by BFAD and for your information Mr.Bob cryptomonadales is widely used here in the Philippines and I’ve never heard someone complaining of the negative effects of this supplement hence most users are even considering this as a MIRACLE drug since it helps in improving their health conditions…
I’m so disappointed in your demonic way of selling your own product…
I’m suggesting you try this supplement because I assure you 101% that it can cure your INSANITY…

  17. Andrea Lauro says:

I believe you are correct in the claim that Spirulina and Chlorella cannot cross-breed.
I have not come across anyone claiming to cross them. However, I have taken all super green foods for years now from the highest quality to the more affordable variety. I can say with all certainty that Cryptomonadales is a class on its own in what it can do and how quickly it returns a response.
Maybe some people are quick to market Cryptomonadales as some magic strain as part of their ignorance gone wild. They are marketed as small pills with embossing as a protection from imitation. You can break them down and have them analyzed yourself.
A fistful of genuine Cryptomonadales a day has done for me what a bunch of high-end supplements cannot do. I have done high dose therapies, paleo diets and have piled on volumes of high-end anti-oxidants. I have not encountered a supplement like Cryptomonadales though I wish it were more affordable.

Cryptomonadales normalize blood sugar levels for diabetes patients, says institute
    http://www.etaiwannews.com/Taiwan/2002/11/06/1036544858.htm
2002-11-06 / Taiwan News, Staff Reporter / By Yvonne Tsai
The National Health Research Institute yesterday confirmed research results, which showed the effect of cryptomonadales in lowering blood sugar and blood fat in diabetes patients.

The NHRI reported that after continuously taking doses of cryptomonadales for 30 days, 90 percent of research patients showed a 25 percent decline in blood fat, and the blood sugar levels of diabetes sufferers improved to within healthy limits.

NHRI research team director Su Yi-ren stated that cryptomonadales are a species of green algae, which, after long-established evidence of their ability to reduce blood fat and blood sugar, have now been proven to have those benefits. However, the Department of Health has not yet officially recognized green algae as a health food.

According to International Chlorella Co. Ltd., cryptomonadales are a unicellular plant containing chlorophyll, vitamins and high levels of protein. When applied in medication, cryptomonadales have been used to cure or alleviate many kinds of chronic diseases, including cancer, anemia, lupus, sterility and so on. In order to gain scientific proof, International Chlorella Co. Ltd entrusted National Cheng Kung University Hospital to conduct several experiments and to provide pilot research on human subjects.

NHRI Bio-technology and medical research deputy director Chien Chih-sian said that five years ago, more than ten patients suffering from heart disease and diabetes were found to have seen an improvement in their health after taking green algae products. Further research found that the curative effects were due to cryptomonadales.

Through clinical observation, it has been discovered that diabetes is strongly linked to high blood fat diseases, and current medication has serious side effects. It is reported that if the activating factor can be refined in cryptomonadales, it could be used to benefit diabetes patients.

During the tests, 30 test patients took 30 cryptomonadales doses each day over the period of one month. The NHRI said that positive effects were noticeable after two weeks. After one month, 90 percent of the subjects had reduced blood fat levels by 25 percent.

The Bureau of Health Promotion under the Health Department stated that an estimated 360,000 people in Taiwan suffer from diabetes without knowing it. People with diabetes are 17 times more likely to suffer retina deterioration. Therefore, the bureau urged people over 40 to be tested to find out if they have diabetes in order to reduce their chances of blindness.

Center for Disease Control consultant Huang Kao-bin discovered that diabetes patients infected with dengue fever have a higher death rate. Huang indicated that diabetes will cause pathological changes to blood vessels, and dengue hemorrhage fever can cause bleeding and thromboplastin malfunctions, both affecting blood vessels. The reason diabetes patients have a higher susceptibility to theses diseases’ symptoms is still unknown.

According to the NHRI, diabetes is the fifth most common cause of death in Taiwan, with around 10,000 people dying of diabetes last year. Statistics from the Business Communications Co. show that the global market for diabetes medication exceeds US$11.7 billion.

At present, treatment for diabetes largely consists of medication and diet control, in combination with exercise. Diet control is considered the most important of these measures.

The NHRI and International Chlorella Co. Ltd. will conduct a three-year research project to make use of scintillation proximity assay to sift cryptomonadales components and look for the activating factor to enhance body insulin reception, increase insulin activation and reduce blood fat.

    Dear all,

I can’t make any claims soon since I just started taking this for 2 months in Malaysia ( Country next to Singapore, just in case you wonder )

I came to this product full with doubt at first, until my 60 years old mum & 70 years old father took for the first week back in June. My mum was a lady with Hipertension, Diabetes, been taking medicine for 10 years. And my father’s been having diabetes for 20 years, and case went worst by needing injection of insulin back in 2011.

The results shown after a week they took Cryptomonadales, both diabetes and blood pressure went down and back in normal stages on the second week, i was so surprised and keep on asking both of them to monitor and do blood sugar test every morning, the results seems promising, and so i tried asking them to stop all medicine as well as injection on the second month, and up to date, they had stop all medication for 2 weeks, all the readings are normal and better compared to the time when they having what’s the doctor gave. And the recent body check @ local hospital gave a green light to both their health status, and the doctor went shock reading all the data, once wonder if the lab took the wrong reports.

I can’t do any conclusion yet as this is only two months old data, as I wonder if this will bring any side effects on the long run, but at least they both living happily now without facing all those fancy tablets from hospital.

And by the way, they took one more product from the same company called ” Sea Cucumber Jelly ” together with Cryptomonadales, would it be both that do the magic or?

I’m just sharing what i see and experienced, but still with doubt, as a result i google any scientific reports that support their claims, that’s why i’m here, I will keep monitoring and share whatever results i will have in the coming futures, as well as marking this page as live feed to keep updated from you guys, and I do appreciate Bob for taking all the efforts to find all the info that may have come to him. Please do share and take Bob’s research into account as I always believe every thing has different views from different vision, that’s how our modern technology came from, share, discuss and invent.

I have been taking Cryptonadales (From Taiwan) for many many years and have always felt like a million bucks!!! I have even given it to my dogs and cats as well as placing a little bid in my fish tank. Low and behold, I have healthy pets! In fact, they died (I had a few of them over the years) of very old age and not one, NOT ONE (except over eating) was ever sick!!!!! I have also given it to my children (From the start of 2 yrs) and they are very healthy adults and they in turn give it to their children as well!! I am not a scientist nor went past the 12th grade, nor have fancy words BUT I do know that Cryptonadales (I will only buy those that are produced in Taiwan) does WORK as it states!! Those that have negative comments concerning Chlorella (Taiwan) reminds me of the FDA..They do not heal but makes you into a customer for life!!!

  22. Eka Yanti says:

    Hi All !
After read through all of the comments, I believe you are all misunderstand what Bob wrote on his article. He NEVER never doubt the benefit of Cryptomonadales’s to the society. He wrote it a few times on his above article that Crytomonadales or Chlorella or Spirulina itself is a superfood and give a good health to human. It is the Combination between Chlorella which is plant and Spirulina which is a bacteria into ONE STRAIN as claimed by the producer is the one he doubt of, from scientist’s point of view. Plant and bacteria never can be in one strain as far as the research in this millenium. I believe he is agree with all of us that Cryptomonadales is a super food and do good to our health but DISAGREE that Chlorella (plant) and Spirulina (Bacteria) can be in one strain as claimed by Taiwan producer. Please read carefully someone’s article before you give an opinion or bad judgement because it is quite funny when someone wrote an article and you give a bad comment which is not related with his point on his article especially when you are a doctor. That is why Bob never reply to your comments because it is not related. I’m just a 30 yo housewife live in Indonesia

  23. Dang says:

Chlorella is a green algae, is spirulina not a blue green algae? . Some say that spirulina is an algae but you say that it is a bacteria. I do not drink or take stuff made from these organisms I’m just curious about that particular information

this article made me realize that people not only have selective listening but also selective READING.. as Eka Yanti pointed out how much of the above comments have missed the ‘point’.

  25. Hi! I just wanted to ask if you ever have any trouble with hackers? My last blog (wordpress) was hacked and I ended up losing months of hard work due to no backup. Do you have any solutions to prevent hackers?
