Dieting and Fasting with Spirulina and Chlorella

by Bob McCauley, ND

“Instead of medicine, fast for a day.”

~ Plutarch[i]

One of the keys to Achieving Great Health is consuming sufficient amounts of plant protein.  High fat diets are popular because the foods they suggest you eat taste good and are satisfying.  Therein lie the parameters of what most of us consider when putting something in our body: taste.  As long as our precious taste buds are satisfied, the nutritional value becomes irrelevant.  We are raised on certain foods, and consuming tasty foods is all many of us understand about eating.  Diet plans play into this wonderfully.

I fasted on Spirulina and Chlorella exclusively for 10 days since they both contain 60% protein, close to the percentage that high protein diets recommend.  I consumed nothing else except Ionized Water during that time and never had more energy in my life.  It gave my body a chance to rest, repair and adjust in positive ways.  I didn’t feel burdened by the digestive demands of other raw foods that are not as powerful or as easily digested as Spirulina and Chlorella.  The fiber in Chlorella has an even better chance to cleanse the digestive tract when other foods are not present.  It was one of the best detoxifications I have ever been through.  A heavily toxic person needs to ease into the Spirulina & Chlorella Diet because it is immediately and profoundly detoxifying to the entire body, especially the liver, which is the toxin filter for the body.  One of Chlorella’s most well known attributes is its liver healing abilities, something no other food possesses.[ii]

I lost 10 pounds on the Spirulina & Chlorella Diet and felt I could have easily kept going.  Fasting with algae is the healthiest way to lose weight because your body is absolutely getting all the essential nutrients it requires.  The Spirulina and Chlorella “Algae Diet” is a high-protein, low-carbohydrate, low-fat diet.  The big difference is that the Algae Diet is actually quite healthy because it uses plant-based protein from raw foods, whereas low carbohydrate diets use cooked foods and animal protein as their fare, which of course lead to our many health problems, especially cancer and coronary heart disease.  The Algae Diet is 60% protein, 19% carbohydrates and 6% fat, which is a perfect food complement ratio if your goal is to lose weight without the fear of any negative health effects or potential malnutrition.

When your body is receiving nutrients from powerful raw foods and its nutritional needs are being met, it does not constantly cry out for more food, and our hunger level decreases.  When you eat junk foods or fast foods, your body absorbs the fat and since there are little if any nutrients in those foods, you are hungry again only hours later.  The body does not cry out for nutrients when it is on the Algae Diet.  I was not hungry at all during the 10 days I dieted with Spirulina and Chlorella.

Diet plans play around with the types and ratio of fats, carbohydrates and protein we consume.  They rarely speak to the nutritional content of the foods they propose you eat, but rather focus on what combinations of foods we should and shouldn’t eat if we want to lose weight.  Diet plans mask what they truly are by trying to be informative about health, explaining how vitamins, minerals and other nutrients function in the body.  Some diet plans want you to weigh the food you consume, which is only necessary when you are on a cooked-food diet.  Volume of food is never a concern when you live on raw foods.

Diet plans are the ultimate enablers (along with pharmaceuticals) that encourage us to keep eating harmful substances that are void of nutrients simply so we can shed pounds, as though the simple act of losing weight is all we need to be concerned with to be healthy.  Weight loss is healthy for an overweight person, but it is counter-productive to lose weight by putting unhealthy substances into the body.

Diet plans should be avoided for the most part because the vast majority of them unnaturally trick the body into temporarily loosing weight by upsetting the balance of protein, carbohydrates and fat that we consume.  In short, they tinker with the body’s metabolism and hormonal structure to the detriment of our health.

The key to all diets is drinking sufficient amounts of water each day.  The Spirulina & Chlorella high-protein, high-nutrient diet promotes quick weight loss without the fear that it would harm your body because they are perfect foods with a complete complement of nutrients.  Unlike any other diet, your health is not in jeopardy when you go on the Spirulina and Chlorella Diet.

The Life and Times of a Nutritional Maverick

By Bob McCauley, ND

“If you let people think they are thinking, they will love you.
If you make them think, they will hate you.”

~ Don Marquis

The word vegetarian derives not from the word vegetable as one would assume, but from the Latin homo vegetus, whose literal translation means someone who is lively, fresh, vigorous, robust and healthy.  Romans referred to this kind of person as a vegetarian.  I only discovered this recently, but in the 25 years I have been one I have learned why I call myself a vegetarian, what it actually means and how to defend myself against attacks and scorn for being one.  If you stop eating meat, you will open yourself up to derision from the rest of the meat-eating world.  But as a vegetarian, you will know that you are unwilling to sacrifice your health for the taste of animal flesh.

You become a maverick, an outsider, the day you announce to the world that you will no longer be consuming cooked foods.  You are an outcast because you are no longer part of the cooked-food clan that composes 99% of our society.  If you think outside the cooked-food trap, you are considered a health nut, not someone who simply wants to put healthy things into their body instead of substances that have little or no nutrition and lead to all disease.  Being a nutritional maverick does not make moving to the raw-food lifestyle any easier.  These are the times in which we live, and you will be displaced from the world when you decide to take your health back and not put yourself on the latest low fat, high protein, pill slimming diet.  But know in your heart that you are a nutritional pioneer who will have the last laugh because you will not be the one facing disease and all its deadly arrows.  And all those who remain behind in the dull, dangerous cooked-food world will eventually wish they had come with you.

Food brings us together in many ways.  People gather socially around food more than anything else.  When you become a raw foodist, you alienate yourself from social gatherings that take place around food, especially during the holidays when families get together to share love, gifts and food.

It has never been a problem for me because I don’t judge what others eat even though I myself am constantly judged.  In fact, I never comment on what they eat unless I’m asked about it and then I diplomatically explain to them why cooked foods don’t belong in the body and why raw foods do.  I tell them that my health is of great importance to me, much more important than what I put in my mouth that might happen to taste good.  If they are persistent and suggest that a little meat, potatoes or other cooked foods aren’t going to hurt me, I explain that I have broken my addiction to cooked foods and I don’t want to go back to them because they are not the path to health.  I enjoy my health the way they enjoy their food.  I explain that there is more to food than only taste.  If they persist, I finally tell them that I intend to honor the temple that God gave me by putting the foods in it that God created himself, raw foods that have not been destroyed by man and his invention called cooking.  They usually leave me alone at that point.

That is my life, that of a nutritional maverick.  I prefer it because I have grown to love the raw foods I eat each day.  Sometimes you need to ride alone for a while until others see the value of what you are doing and begin to follow you.  Without doubt, some eventually will.  Many will be inspired by your discipline and healthy appearance.

The times that we live in have never been more favorable to be a raw foodist.  There is a sea change occurring in our fundamental thinking about health.  The medical establishment and the various health care systems are draining our resources chasing cures that simply don’t exist in the world of pharmaceuticals, chemicals, radiation, surgery and other artificial treatments.  Increasingly, people are realizing that running to the doctor when they get sick only to be treated for the symptoms of their disease rather than the disease itself is doing nothing for their health.  Consequently, minds are beginning to open to the alternatives.  Our trust in doctors and their artificiality, bred into us from birth, is waning as our innate trust of nature reemerges.

Once you accept the fact that cooked foods are addictive and that you are an addict, a profound choice will be laid at your feet that you will be forced to confront.  You will either move toward the raw food life or you will chose to ignore the truth about health and continue on your path of taste and pleasure at the expense of life’s ultimate gift, your health.

The Raw-food Diet is the only diet that leads to true health.  The constant promotion and marketing of extracts, concentrates, enzymes and synthesized hormones only serve to confuse the average person who knows little about health.  They hear that everything they are used to eating is bad for them, although tasty, satisfying, healthy alternatives are never offered to replace everything they know about food.  After you’ve been told your whole life that chicken soup is good for a cold, it’s hard to accept that mom was wrong and that raw, something completely alien to everything you know, is right.  The cooked-food lifestyle and the world of medicine that attempts to control the innumerable diseases that result from it is one of utter hopelessness.

The body that is built from cooked materials that are void of enzymes is ready to crumble at any moment.  A body built of raw foods will put itself into perfect health and last as long as it was built to last, and it will not die of disease.

And when you are challenged by others, know that you regularly practice true health.  When practiced absolutely, the reward is absolute.  Without doubt, you will rise to the next level of your life.  That is the fine art of true health.

Banting’s Knights (The Undertaker’s Diet) – Atkins’ Revisited

by Bob McCauley, ND

 “To repeat what others have said, requires education;
to challenge it, requires brains.”

~ Mary Poole

William Banting, an overweight undertaker, discovered that removing carbohydrates from his diet caused him to dramatically lose weight in a short period of time.  In 1863, he published a short pamphlet called Letter on Corpulence, Addressed to the Public, and the fad diet immediately became popular as the public fell in love with it.  Those who followed the new diet became known as Banting’s Knights.  The medical establishment of the time denounced the diet as dangerous and they were right to do so.  The low-carbohydrate diet has died and come back to life every 25 years with uncanny regularity since its inception.  In the 1970’s, it surfaced again under the Atkins banner where it has been pushed relentlessly ever since.
Starchy carbohydrates quickly put fat on us if we remain on a cooked-food diet because we loose the enzymes necessary to process carbohydrates into sugar to be burned by the body.  This will, in turn, affect our ability to produce certain hormones, such as the hormone that helps regulate carbohydrates being turned into sugar instead of fat.  Once our body loses its ability to produce these enzymes and hormones, fat quickly displaces on the hips.  This is particularly common in young women and it usually happens in less than two years.  It also helps give carbohydrates a bad reputation.

If you remove carbohydrates from your diet and live almost exclusively on fat and protein, your body will have no other choice than to burn its fat.  However, the resulting imbalances of the body are catastrophic.  The low-carbohydrate diet has been labeled the uremic diet by the medical community because it causes an excess of nitrogen waste products in the urine.  High protein diets produce ammonia and urea in the body, which are both toxic.  These require large amounts of water intake to be flushed from the body.  Unfortunately, a high protein diet acts like a diuretic that drains the body of water.  The intercellular fluid is then drained from the body’s cells leading to chronic cellular dehydration, a precursor to most disease.  It can also increase the risk of kidney stones and bone loss.[i]

The resulting symptoms of being on a high protein/fat diet are strikingly similar to those of starvation.  First is a loss of sodium and water followed by a loss in potassium, which is followed then by a breakdown in body protein.  The results of this are fatigue, weakness and muscle wasting.  This can lead to a drop in metabolism, which accounts for the sudden weight gain that people experience when they go off such a diet because it can take months for the body’s metabolism to regain its previously higher level.

Sometimes the high protein/fat diet is called the ketogenic diet.  Fat cannot be properly oxidized without the presence of carbohydrates, which leads to an accumulation of ketone bodies, a condition known as ketosis.  The body also produces considerable more lactic acid on a high protein/fat diet.  Both lead to acidosis or the acidification of the body, which makes us vulnerable to all disease including viruses, bacteria, infection and tumor growth.

A high acid, low fiber diet strains the liver and kidneys.  The high level of phenylalanine in meat can interfere with serotonin production in the brain, which can lead to depression.  The high level of methionine in chicken contributes to elevated homocysteine levels, which is a major factor in heart disease.  Excessive protein can also lead to Leaky Gut Syndrome (LGS) as the undigested protein enters the bloodstream, which causes an immune response because the protein is identified by the body as a foreign invader.  Chronic rashes and other skin conditions are also symptoms of LGS.

Diet plans that promote high protein/fat, low carbohydrate consumption are dangerous because they can easily become a nutritional nightmare if the diet is taken too literally.  It is not only the kind of diet that is promoted, but the kind of foods they encourage people to eat that makes them so unhealthy.  Nutritional content in most diet plans is all but ignored, although they make themselves sound quite nutritious.  These diets promote foods that are low in sugar and white flour, but high in protein and fat, especially animal fat that is nutritionally inferior and dangerous because it is a major cause of cardiovascular disease.  Most diet plans don’t want you to miss any of the foods you love so they invent sophistic schemes to allow you to include the unhealthiest foods imaginable in your diet.  A typical meal might be steak, bacon and eggs or processed, prepackaged foods that are nutritionally void and for the most part are mere stomach fillers.  Diets such as these trick the physiology of the body into shedding pounds, but often at a great cost to your health.  They have made many people sick, but for one person, Rachel Huskey, the high protein/fat, low carbohydrate diet became fatal.[ii]  Quite prophetic given that the diet’s original founder was an undertaker.

The Curse of Louis Pasteur

Bob McCauley, ND

“The primary cause of our disease is in us, always in us.”

~ Antoine Beachamp

Antoine Bechamp

Antoine Bechamp

Why We Should Eat Plant Instead of Animal Nutrients
Although it would not be an ideal diet, the truth is that we could eat meat, fish, eggs and dairy if we consumed them raw.  In the early 1900’s, a therapy called the raw milk cure became popular for relieving a number of aliments.  It worked well to some extent because raw milk is full of enzymes and therefore was not a strain to the body’s digestive system.  The milk also was not adulterated by growth hormones, steroids and antibiotics that are prevalent in today’s commercial dairy products, which of course are pasteurized and therefore dead.  It was the unprocessed, enzyme rich nature of the raw milk that didn’t tax the digestive system, but instead put the body into a better position where it could cure itself.

We can expect similar results from any animal food if it is consumed raw.[i]  Like raw plant foods, raw animal food sources are far more alkaline because they haven’t been cooked.  Cooking introduces great amounts of acidity to all foods, especially animal food sources.  It also denatures the protein structure and other natural chemical substances of foods.  We find people around the world who consume raw animal foods to be more alkaline than those who do not.  For instance, the Japanese of Okinawa who consume mostly raw seaweed, fish and cooked rice are among the longest living peoples in the world.[ii]

Animal Protein: meat-fish-eggs-dairy

Animal Protein: meat-fish-eggs-dairy

However, raw animal food sources (meat, fish, eggs and dairy) do not house the powerful nutraceutical properties that are needed to truly cure the body of disease because they do not have rejuvenative properties.  Only raw algae, fruits, vegetables, nuts and seeds possess the nutrients that are needed by the body to completely cure itself of any disease.

Louis Pasture

Louis Pasture

Because of Louis Pasteur’s theory that disease is found in food sources rather than within the body, we ended up with pasteurization and our eternal quest to kill germs.  Pasteurized dairy products contain no enzymes and therefore no life.  Pasteurization, which is used to process many foods in order to “save” us from germs, transforms them into substances that are quite dangerous for the body.  The curse of Louis Pasteur lives on.

Measuring Body pH – Critical Measurement of Overall Health

By Bob McCauley, ND

pH is a measurement of the relative concentration of positive and negative ions.  When they are present in equal quantities we have reached a state of equilibrium within the body and our pH will be 7.0.  There are two ways to measure body pH, which should not be confused with blood pH.  The blood always maintains pH between 7.25 – 7.45.  If it falls out of that range the body will quickly go into shock and death will follow soon after.  Anything that does get into the bloodstream outside of that pH is immediately pushed out into the body’s tissue.

Body pH
The pH of saliva and urine is a much more accurate measure of overall body pH.  I believe that the pH of the body should be approximately 7.0, which is neutral.  There are many opinions of what the pH of the body should actually be.  I have read as low as 6.3 and as high as 7.2.  If you are sick your body pH will be low.  The sicker you are the lower your pH will be.  For instance, if you have advanced cancer your body pH will most likely be near 5.0.

Tools for measuring pH

Body pH can be measured using pH paper, pH indicator liquid (phenol red) or a digital pH meter.

Measuring with Saliva
The mouth tends to be slightly alkaline, which is why it is a poor barometer of the overall pH of the body.  The saliva is a more accurate measure of the body from the waist up, which includes the upper digestive tract.  Therefore, it is not a good measure of overall body pH.  pH test strips are the only way to test saliva pH.

Measuring with Urine

Many things can affect body pH throughout each day, such as diet and stress level.  In order to get an accurate determination of body pH, the urine should be measured first thing in the morning each day for at least week, although a month would better.  As you continue to measure your pH each morning, a profile, or “moving average,” will emerge that will be far more accurate than taking a single reading.  Urine pH can be measured using pH paper, pH indicator liquid (phenol red) or a digital pH meter.

pH is Critical to Our Health.

10 Reasons to Keep Our Bodies Hydrated

by Bob McCauley, ND

1. Water is the substance of life. Life can not exist without Water.

2. The body is comprised of 68% water.  Water is the most important element the body requires.

3. It is difficult for the body to get water from any other source than water itself.

4. Water plays a vital role in nearly every bodily function.

5. Water is essential for proper digestion, nutrient absorption and chemical reactions.

6. Water is essential for proper circulation in the body.

7. Water helps remove toxins from the body, in particular from the digestive tract.

8. Water regulates the body’s cooling system.

9. Consistent failure to hydrate the body will lead to Chronic Cellular Dehydration.

10. Dehydration can occur at any time of the year, therefore it is critical that you make water a constant part of your lifestyle.

“I was in Perfect Physical Shape and I Still Had a Heart Attack” and Other Myths Perpetuated by the Pharmaceutical Industry – Pt 2

Part Two

The Greatest Myth in History

By Bob McCauley, ND

Part One

Disease disguises itself in old age.  Disease wears old age as a cloak of deception.  Old age does not cause, nor does it result in disease.  Not keeping your body properly hydrated, living on a cooked/processed-food diet, not exercising, etc., that’s what leads to disease.  Not getting old.  And although we may have a genetic propensity towards certain disease – all disease can easily be overcome by proper diet, bodily hydration and vigorous exercise. Our concept of

Most people will shake their head at the idea of living to be 90 or 100 years
old because they have only seen cooked foodists who are that age and for the most part, they are not a pretty sight.  Half the people over age 85 are senile and have lost touch with reality to some degree.  Most cannot walk without assistance, nor perform basic maintenance on themselves, such as bathing and caring for their own nails.  Most are incontinent and need assistance when going to the bathroom.  They are sacks of bones and blood, mere shadows of what they once were.  When someone dies of “old age” it simply means that they had so many diseases it could not be determined which one killed them.  Given these circumstances, I would not want to stay alive to that age either.

However, if I was able to still perform all those tasks, including doing most of the things I did when I was in my twenties, I would want to stay alive another day as much as anyone else.  Why would anyone ever want to die at a certain age?  If you believe you probably will want to die before the age of 100 simply because you have lived long enough, then why don’t you believe that at 30, 40 or any age for that matter?  We are conditioned to think this way because we have our health when we are young. It is brainwashing passed from generation to generation without the knowledge that it even is brainwashing, a lie unwittingly forced upon us that we all believe to be the truth. And the myth is passed to us by the people we most trust, our parents and grandparents.  We are programmed to believe that we will be lucky to live a “long life” of 90 years, but that the last few years will be spent dying of some disease until we inevitably succumb.  This lie we believe in must be wrecked.

We need to abandon the preconceived notion that death by disease is involuntary and there is nothing we can do to change it.  Our life will be as long and healthy as we choose it to be if we live on a Raw-food Diet and keep ourselves constantly hydrated and invigorated with daily exercise.

Nutrition Experts from the Medical World: Run for Your Lives!

by Bob McCauley, ND

I’m looking at the list of “Nutrition Experts” at the Institute for Integrative Nutrition – The World’s Largest Nutrition School.   The only one on the list that I would take any advice about nutrition is David Wolfe, and it’s because he’s the only raw foodist on the list that I know of. Andrew Weil MD, Joel Fuhrman MD, Howard Lyman, Mark Hyman MD, Bernie Siegel MD, Barry Sears PhD, Neal Barnard MD, Deepak Chopra, Arthur Agatston MD (South Beach Diet)?  Are you kidding me?  These are ALL big name medical doctors, just like Dr. J. Mercola, that constantly refer to studies that highlight this nutrient or that nutrient.

They don’t know anything about real nutrition or that health, true health, can ONLY come from living on a vegan diet of raw fruits and vegetables.  They chip around the edges just like the rest of the medical establishment.  (For the record, The South Beach Diet is the worse diets imaginable – second to the Atkins Diet.) This collection of medical fools couldn’t tell you what to do to be healthy if they wanted to.  Most medical doctors can’t even get their own symbol straight (see The Caduceus vs. Staff of Asclepius. What a joke!

Save your money, visit your local farmer’s market and when you get home, DON’T COOK YOUR FOOD!  That’s my advice anyway. And as far as the medical establishment and their own symbol which they don’t seem to know which to use. My favorite is at the left from Zazzle.

Hydrate, Alkalize & Detoxify Because That’s What Leads to Health

by Bob McCauley, ND

H.A.D.   If we want to be healthy we must Hydrate, Alkalize and Detoxify (HAD) our body, which creates an environment of health within the body.  Ionized Water is an antioxidant produced by electrolysis that Hydrates, Alkalizes and Detoxifies the body when consumed.  Ionized Water is the healthiest substance we can put in the body because there is nothing better for us than water and there is no better water than ionized water.  The most common cause of disease is that people don’t drink enough water, which leads to chronic cellular dehydration where the body’s cells are unable to function to their capacity and serve the body as they are meant to.

Living foods (raw, uncooked, unprocessed fruits and vegetables) should be consumed because they also Hydrate, Alkalize and Detoxify the body.  Living foods are filled with enzymes, which only God is capable of creating.  Everything we do as humans, whether we think, walk, talk, blink, etc, is the result of enzymatic reactions.  Yet we constantly put cooked and processed foods in our body that are void of enzymes. The reason we eat cooked foods is because we like their taste and we are under the mistaken impression that they are healthy for us when in fact they are not.  Cooked foods should be considered an addiction because they are not healthy for us, yet most of us cannot stop consuming them.  It is impractical to believe that we will change our diet overnight to one comprised exclusively of living foods.  Instead, we must try to make them as much a part of our diet as possible.  We must create new traditions with our friends and family that revolve around living foods that are created by God and have not had their invaluable nutrients destroyed by cooking and/or processing.

If we truly HydrateAlkalize and Detoxify the body we will forever be able to maintain our level of health and live disease free.

Of course you were in “perfect physical shape” when you had a heart attack.  That’s what happens to everyone who is in perfect physical shape; they have heart attacks and strokes (heart attack of the brain).  In fact, this scenario plays out countless times a day, perfectly healthy people in perfect physical shape drop like flies from heart attacks.  I’m sure he was just walking along – healthy as a well-fed teen – and suddenly he has a heart attack.  Why?  Because he was old, of course.  It’s inevitable that we all get sick and have heart attacks or cancer or some other disease when we’re old.  That’s what being old is all about: disease.  Or so we are taught to believe.

You would think the FDA – Food and Drug Association – that is supposed to keep us safe by making companies tell the truth about their products – might want to talk to Bayer Aspirin about their ridiculous commercial that features an elderly man sitting alone talking to us in a testimonial manner: “I was in perfect physical condition and I had a heart attack.”

Well, I beg to differ.  This guy, whoever he is, was NOT in “perfect physical condition” when he had a heart attack or he would have not had a heart attack to begin with.   People who are in perfect physical condition don’t have heart attacks because they have strong hearts that are not susceptible to heart failure, heart attacks or strokes.  This is achieved by living on my health protocol and not living on a diet of cooked and/or processed foods that are void of nutrients.

I’m not trying to split hairs, but it is important to note two things in regards to this notion that we can be in “perfect physical condition” and still have a heart attack.  That is the average person’s perception of health is and what our expectations of health are as we age.  The commercial is incredibly misleading when you stop to think about it because it is suggesting that even the healthy are susceptible to a heart attack when in fact nothing could be further from the truth.  People who ARE actually healthy don’t have heart attacks or strokes, but rather only people who are not.  If the man in the commercial was actually a healthy person he would not have had the heart attack.   A recent poll revealed that 66% of people (in the US) rate their health as good or excellent.  People believe that they are healthy because they don’t exhibit any outward signs of disease.

To be continued . . .
