I am often asked if the products I sell and the advice I offer are dangerous for people.  Of course they are not, although anything can be misused and abused such as drinking more than one liter of water per hour, which can be devastating to our health.

What is never asked by the average person is whether the doctor or hospital where they are being treated might be dangerous to their health.  Consider these facts:

The medical profession was the third leading cause of death in 2002.[i]  The first and second causes of death were cancer and cardiovascular disease. 106,000 people died from the negative effects of pharmaceuticals;[ii] 80,000 people died from infections in hospitals;[iii] 20,000 people died from errors made while in the hospital;[iv] 12,000 died due to unnecessary surgery;[v] 7,000 died due to medication errors in hospitals.[vi]  Going to see a doctor can be a dangerous proposition.  You are 9000 times more likely to accidentally be killed by a doctor than by a gun.[vii]  The alternative is making sure we don’t have to go to the doctor’s office or hospital in the first place.

It is okay question what you are unfamiliar with such as spirulina and chlorella that you are not familiar with.  It’s okay to question whether it is healthy to move to a raw food diet.  But also remember to question your doctor, your doctor’s advice and anything they want to do to you in a hospital.  The statistics are not in their favor.  FYI.

Ask a Medical Doctor Health Questions? Google It Yourself.

Not just a doctor, but a doctor from the famed Mayo Clinic.  You would think that someone who is actually a doctor at the Mayo Clinic might be able to let us know whether a Far Infrared Sauna  (FIR) is healthy or not.  Read below and all we get from Brent A. Bauer, MD (medical doctor) is  “Perhaps” as whether a FIR Sauna is healthy or not.  This is pretty much all you can get out of most medical doctors because they are ignorant about health since they have only been taught medicine, and along with medical procedures this is our only hope to slow, if not stop, the inevitability of disease.

If your doctor doesn’t know that the second most valuable health product known is the FIR Sauna, then stop going to your doctor for health advice.  Doctors understand medicine.  Health is not medicine and does not derived from medicine, or medical procedures such as  chemotherapy and often surgery.

A far-infrared sauna is a type of sauna that uses light to create Brent A. Bauer, M.D.heat. “Far” describes where the infrared waves fall on the light spectrum. A traditional sauna uses heat to warm the air, which in turns warms your body. An infrared sauna heats your body directly without warming the air around you.

The appeal of saunas in general is that they cause reactions, such as vigorous sweating and increased heart rate, similar to those elicited by moderate exercise. An infrared sauna produces these results at lower temperatures than does a regular sauna, which makes it accessible to people who can’t tolerate the heat of a conventional sauna. But does that translate into tangible health benefits? Perhaps.

Perhaps?  That’s reassuring given that well built FIR Sauna’s start at around $3500.

Several studies have looked at using infrared saunas in the treatment of chronic health problems, such as high blood pressure, congestive heart failure and rheumatoid arthritis, and found some evidence of benefit. However, larger and more-rigorous studies are needed to confirm these results.

You can always demand more studies be conducted on something that you really don’t know much about, and you don’t know what you’re talking about.   More studies will determine everything.

On the other hand, no adverse effects have been reported with infrared saunas. So if you’re considering trying a sauna for relaxation, an infrared sauna might be an option.  http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/infrared-sauna/an02154  

Relaxation?  That is at the bottom of the list of the benefits of the FIR Sauna.  Deep detoxification  immune builder, cardio builder, improves skin health.  These are the profound benefits of the FIR Sauna, not relaxation.

Next time you want to be educated about health, Google it yourself.  You’ll save yourself a lot of time and get the same answers that doctors get when they get try to answer health questions.

Questions About Ionized Water, Spirulina, Chlorella

At what age do you like to start the infants on the Ionized Alkaline water ?  Also , is there a certain  pH  given relative to actual age for the little ones ?  My Grandson is 8 months old ..

I replied:
I would start giving the 8 month old ionized water now.  Start out at a low pH, about 8 – 9.0.  By 12 – 18 months they can consume it full strength.

I just want to know specifically what pH water you are using for :–
1/ When you take the Chlorella / Spirulina probiotics before a meal ?

My reply:
pH 7.0 – not so high so it won’t alkalize the stomach before a meal.  I drink water for two hours after a workout.  When I take the spirulina after 2 hours then 8 – 9 pH.
His next question:

Bob , there seems to be lots of talk at present about natural water ionizers & a move away from Electric ionizers ??..  What are your thoughts on this ? 

My response:
AQ_700Nothing compares with water produced through electrolysis which requires electricity.  The other products are good, but they don’t produce a true negative ORP.

Sprouting: The Year Round Inside Garden

2013-02-24 14.28.14Other than algae, sprouts are our most powerful food source.  It is ironic that sprouts have a wimpy connotation to them because they are among the strongest foods known.  When a seed sprouts, it produces in great quantities some of its most powerful anti-disease chemical agents that are then spread throughout the plant as it grows to maturity.  A good example of this is the broccoli sprout, which produces sulforaphane, a powerful cancer-fighting, chemoprotective agent, at a concentration of 30 – 50 times of that found in the entire plant at maturity.[i]  Another chemical substance found in broccoli is Indole-3-carbinol, a powerful phytochemical, is effective for “fighting cancer and other cancers”.[ii]  This is an example of the miraculous properties and healing potential of sprouts.  Those who did the research stated that synthesized compounds that would increase the resistance of cells and tissues to carcinogens were under development, but were still years away from being marketed.

The truth is that no matter what synthetic compounds may be developed for 2013-02-24 14.29.50this purpose, they will never possess anywhere near the healing power and effectiveness as a natural chemical substance such as sulforaphane when it is derived from a whole food.  It is intensely ironic that these researchers want to artificially replicate sulforaphane and distort its properties when it is already available in the actual sprout in a far more effective, healing and absorbable form.  Even the extraction of sulforaphane from the broccoli sprout would simply diminish its nutraceutical potential, which is why we need to consume the whole food, not extracted components of it.

2013-02-24 14.28.01All sprouts have this high concentration of enzymes and other organic chemical substances in them in the first days of sprouting.  During the winter, when fresh organic produce is sometimes hard to find, I have a sprout garden growing constantly with as many as twenty different kinds of seeds sprouting at any given time.  Some sprouts such as fenugreek have a flavor that cannot be found anywhere else as do many other sprouts.  Many raw foods have a unique flavor that is completely lost once the food has been cooked.

On average, sprouts have a one-to-seven seed-to-sprout ratio; one cup of seeds yields seven cups of sprouts, although that can vary depending on the type of seed.  To sprout seeds, you need only to soak them overnight then place them in a jar, colander or other container that is partially closed so the sprouts can breathe yet retain moisture.  They should be rinsed a few times a day to prevent mold and bacterial growth.  Sprouting trays and bags are available to make the job even easier.  Depending on the variety, seeds take 2 – 7 days to sprout, although some such as onion seeds can take 10 –14 days.

Some of the seeds and beans I sprout are lentils, chick peas, radish, mustard, 2013-02-24 14.28.21alfalfa, red clover, adzuki and mung beans to name a few.  Some seeds such as flax, arugula and chia must be sprouted on terracotta (clay) because they have a glutinous exterior that turns to a jelly-like substance when soaked.  They will not sprout using the other method.

Considering their nutritional potential, sprouts are amongst the most economical and healthy foods you can consume.  It is easy to find organic seeds and they only cost a few dollars a pound.

All unsprouted seeds also possess medicinal properties and are edible if they are pulverized in a grinder instead of sprouting them.  For instance, sesame, flax and sunflower seeds consumed together provide a perfect complement of Omega 3 and 6 essential fatty acids.  They also can be used as “parmesan cheese” to sprinkle on salads and other meals because it looks and tastes quite similar to it when salted.

Seeds should be consumed immediately if they are ground because they will go rancid quickly when exposed to the air.  Ground seeds should also not be eaten in great quantities because they contain enzyme inhibitors that can interfere with digestion.  Enzyme inhibitors will not be a problem for a raw foodist, but can be for someone whose digestive system is pale and weakened by the chronic consumption of cooked foods.  I usually consume 2 – 3 tablespoons of ground raw seeds per meal and I use a medley of many different seeds, most commonly flax, sesame, sunflower, milk thistle and pumpkin seeds.

2013-02-24 14.51.27Many bird species store seeds in a pouch or crop above their stomach for 10 – 14 hours while the seeds take on moisture and begin to sprout.  Witness the instinctual behavior of wild animals for they are great professors of health.  Their institution is the oldest, most prestigious society of health instruction there is.  The information disseminated from nature is infallible and is imparted with the greatest simplicity.  Nature is never wrong.  Your body is an integral part of nature.  Listen to its wisdom, for it too is never wrong.

No Need for Wheat Grass When You Have . . .

One customer wrote to us recently: 

Wheat grass and spirulina vs chlorella?
I own spirulina and take it every morning as well as fresh wheat grass juice that we wheatgrassgrow, i know chlorella is better at removing and binding heavy metals which is what I’m looking for or a detox. Is it really worth buying chlorella if i take the other two. I find chlorella more expensive but spirulina has its pros compare to it and so does chlorella. Should I just stick to wheat grass and spirulina. I eat a very healthy diet.

Chlorella, a green algae, is far more powerful than wheat grass, or any other grass for that chlor-tabsmatter.  In fact, it doesn’t even come close.   Spirulina, a blue-green algae, and chlorella are the most powerful wholefoods known.   If you are taking either one of them there is no reason to take wheat grass.  The only time I consume wheat grass is when it is juiced fresh.  There is nothing wrong with consuming powdered wheat grass, but it has only a fraction of the nutrition potential of either chlorella or spirulina.  The only time I consume wheat grass is when it’s juiced fresh.   Otherwise, I’ll take algae any day.

Spirulina – Most Powerful Food Declared Dangerous By Idiots

I despise misinformation and here is a pile of it for you in an article titled What Are the Dangers of Spirulina? by Maia Appleby, Demand Media – found at the website http://healthyeating.sfgate.com, out of San Francisco.  I don’t know exactly where Maia gets all her information but this article is a perfect example of how you can make ANYTHING look bad.

Twinkies and Oreos aren’t all that bad for you, and prove how they are if you make the claim – is the kind of nonsense we hear from people all the time. But take one of the two healthiest foods on the planet, scrutinize it, measure what’s in it down to the parts per billion and then claim: It’s Dangerous!!  This is nothing less than absolute rubbish.

 “Regularly taking blue-green algae supplements, including spirulina, may be harmful to your cells. Because many consumers have reported experiencing adverse health effects after using spirulina, a group of German researchers conducted a study, published in “Toxicology and Applied Pharmacology” in 2011, reviewing the safety of blue-green algae. They analyzed 13 commercially distributed products and found cytotoxins, substances that are harmful to cells, in each of them. The researchers concluded that such nutritional products are highly questionable.”

Well this is pretty deceptive.  The study they refer to states it tested Chlorella, spirulina and Blue green algae, Aphanizomenon flosaquae or AFA, which comes from Klamath Lake in Oregon, among other lakes in China.

Blue-green algae (sic AFA) can also contain a different kind of highly toxic substance, called anatoxin.

As the article she sited claims, toxins were only found in AFA, not Chlorella or Spirulina.  But why not cast aspersions on Chlorella and spirulina and group them all together anyway?  Either author Maia doesn’t know what she is talking about when it comes to algae or she’s lying.  Either way she’s dangerous because she spews misinformation.

One thing she is right about:

“Like other water-grown nutritional products, spirulina easily absorbs heavy metals, such as mercury and lead, from its environment. Spirulina grown in areas with large concentrations of these metals can contain dangerously high amounts of of them, passing them on to consumers.”

This is true.  The best spirulina in the world comes from southern India and Southern Taiwan.  Hawaiian spirulina is good – however that is going away – Hawaiian land has become too expensive for the cultivation of Spirulina.  But not Astaxanthin.  The spirulina you need to be careful is that which is cultivated in China, one of the most polluted countries on Earth.

“Spirulina contains microcystins, groups of amino acids that can be toxic to your liver if you take in too much of them, according to Purdue University.”

Agreed.  Microcystin levels of Spirulina need to be monitored carefully and reported twice per year.  Don’t consume Spirulina without knowing the microcystin levels.

Here is the most ridiculous contention Maia offer:

Spirulina contains an abundance of nucleic acids, according to the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. These substances, which are related to DNA, produce uric acid when they are metabolized. If too much uric acid accumulates in your body, gout or kidney stones can develop. If you are susceptible to gout attacks or kidney stones, spirulina may be especially harmful to you. To avoid excessive uric acid, the hospital recommends limiting your intake of spirulina to less than 50 grams per day.

One of the keys to longevity is the consumption of nucleic acids (RNA/DNA) and only algae like Chlorella and Spirulina have it in abundance.  The fools in this article tell us to avoid nucleic acids because they cause kidney stones.  Are you kidding me?  You would have to eat several pounds of spirulina to even get noticeable amount of uric acid let alone enough to be dangerous.  Sheer ignorance, quite sheer indeed.  And where did she get this misinformation from:

These researchers, however, go on to suggest that it is not prudent to eat more than 50 g of spirulina daily. The reason they give is that the plant contains a high concentration of nucleic acids, substances related to DNA. When these are metabolized, they create uric acid, which could cause gout or kidney stones. This is of special concern to those who have already had uric acid stones or attacks of gout.

I would love to know who these “Researchers” were that came up with this ridiculous formula of eating no more than 50 grams of spirulina daily to avoid gout and other uric acid related problems, but it seems pretty arbitrary.  Not to mention that 50 grams of spirulina is a huge amount to take each day.  I take around 7 – 8 grams of spirulina daily, and I’m a vegan, so this is what I use for protein – along with chlorella.

Who’s to blame here for all this misinformation and deception?  Maia Appleby for not thoroughly researching spirulina and allowing it to be lumped together with AFA – Blue-green algae, as well as those who wrote the articles she relied on.

Presenting just a little information and not giving the whole picture is a deceptive practice often offered to us by lazy people who don’t really care about what they’re writing.

“It Seems Kelp is a Better Seaweed Than Chlorella”

No food is as powerful as chlorella, or spirulina, which are mico-algae.  Kelp  – a macro algae – evolved from chlorella so while it is also an incredible food that I eat all the time it does not compare with micro-algae such as chlorella.

Kelp can be combined with Chlorella in tablet form.  Fucoidan is amazing and should be in everyone’s diet. Also lots of iodine in kelp, which is a must.

My point always is to include as many foods as possible in your diet since every food is unique.

Chem Trails, Heavy Metals, Chlorella and Spirulina

Considering that both Chlorella and Spirulina are heavy metals absorbers, can you bring the proof that Taiwan Chlorella’s production is not contaminated and does not represent a danger for human health?

There has been much written about chem trails, why they exist and what is in these trails.  The concern here is whether the aluminum, and perhaps other heavy metals, that are reportedly found in chem trails finds its way into chlorella and spirulina.  If you are wondering about aluminum in algae, you may as well wonder about it being in all food since heavy metals of all kinds are replete throughout our environment due to industrialization, which began more than 300 years ago.

There are two things to know about algae.  One is that algae tends to absorb toxins and heavy metals.  The other is that, unlike other plants, algae such as chlorella, not only captures the heavy metal, but it manages to hang on to it and not release it into the body the way other foods tend to.  There are plenty of reasons to take chlorella, and one of the most important is to remove heavy metals, hydrocarbon-based toxins, and even radiation.  

Shilajit, a clay from India, also is effective at removing heavy metals, but in a different way than chlorella, which removes heavy metals with its fiber and two other chemical actions.

To summarize, even though we live in a toxic world if we live primarily on a diet of raw fruits and vegetables, chlorella, spirulina, we consume ionized water and use the FIR sauna regularly, we can easily rid ourselves of toxins of any and every kind, including those found in chem trails.

 Most people will shake their head at the idea of living to be 90 or 100 years old because they have only seen cooked foodists who are that age and for the most part, they are not a pretty sight.  Half the people over age 85 are senile and have lost touch with reality to some degree.  Most cannot walk without assistance, nor perform basic maintenance on themselves, such as bathing and caring for their own nails.  Most are incontinent and need assistance when going to the bathroom.  They are sacks of bones and blood, mere shadows of what they once were.  When someone dies of “old age” it simply means that they had so many diseases it could not be determined which one killed them.  Given these circumstances, I would not want to stay alive to that age either.

However, if I was able to still perform all those tasks, including doing most of the things I did when I was in my twenties, I would want to stay alive another day as much as anyone else.  Why would anyone ever want to die at a certain age?  If you believe you probably will want to die before the age of 100 simply because you have lived long enough, then why don’t you believe that at 30, 40 or any age for that matter?  We are conditioned to think this way because we have our health when we are young.  We feel our whole life is in front of us.  It is only when we are faced with no longer being able to function normally as a human that we want to die gracefully and no longer be a burden to others.  It is only when we are diseased and dilapidated that we will no longer want to live.  Once we have lost our dignity, we want to give up and die because it is too humiliating to live having others care for us as they would a baby.  It is humbling to have the children you once raised now care for you.  Becoming a stick figure ready to be snapped into pieces by a strong gust is what you have to look forward to as a cooked foodist.  However, as a raw foodist you will never decline in such a remorseful fashion unless you go back to your cooked-food ways.

We must know that just because we age does not mean we have to decline physically and mentally.  Adopting this attitude is a key step forward toward Achieving Great Health.  We are programmed to believe that we will be lucky to live a “long life” of 90 years, but that the last few years will be spent dying of some disease until we inevitably succumb.  This lie we believe in must be wrecked.  We need to abandon the preconceived notion that death by disease is involuntary and there is nothing we can do to change it.  Our life will be as long and healthy as we chose it to be if we live on a Raw-food Diet and keep ourselves constantly hydrated and invigorated with daily exercise.

We do not build lofty edifices out of our bodies, but rather drive them into the ground by what we put and don’t put in them.  The human body wilts before our eyes because of our cooked-food diet, lack of exercise and not having the attitude that declares I am unstoppable.  Those of us who hydrate ourselves and eat raw become human towers.  Our bodies are modeled and beautiful regardless of our age.  We reach high to grasp and hold what our hearts most desire.  We live to our full potential.  We are raw foodists.  Nothing can stop us from achieving our goals and we know it.

The First Steps toward Becoming a Raw Foodist

I have found it useful to stop thinking about meals in the rigid way we traditionally regard them.  We are conditioned to build our day around three meals when instead we should only eat when we are hungry.  Your body will crave cooked foods less and less when it is provided with raw nutrients at a cellular level.  The constant companion of hunger will leave you.  We do not need the three meals we are accustomed to, rather, that is programmed into us, which is a central component of the obesity problem today.  We look at a clock to know if it’s time to eat instead of our stomachs.

We need to break our pattern and start thinking outside the norms we are accustomed to when it comes to food.  When we eat only when we are hungry, we begin to view food as a supply of nutrients we require to be healthy, not as something we need to do at a certain time of the day so our stomachs are always full.

An easy way to begin is by increasing the percentage of raw foods in your diet while shrinking the size of the cooked foods you consume.  The concept is simple.  Begin the process with breakfast and carry that sentiment throughout the day.  Start by adding a banana or apple to your cereal, for instance.  Increase the portion of fruit in the cereal each day without increasing how much you eat; this means that the milk and cereal portion will decrease.  Within a short time, you will have transitioned to an all fruit breakfast.  If it is complemented with 4 — 6 grams of Spirulina and Chlorella, you will be meeting all your basic nutritional needs and then some.  Your mornings will be full of energy when you eat this way.

Another approach is to start eating a salad with each meal.  Increase the size of the salad you have each day by 2% and shrink the amount of cooked foods you eat by a corresponding amount.  Following through with this will leave you a 100% raw foodist in less than 50 days.

Another transition is to introduce dehydrated foods to your diet, foods that have had the moisture removed from them.  They can be made into incredible raw food dishes such as sprouted bread, pizza, caramel apples, potato chips and many others, all of them raw and healthy.  While dehydrated foods are not as healthy as fresh raw foods, they are the next best thing.  They are an excellent transition food, but ultimately our goal is to consume 100% fresh raw foods.  The closer you get to that goal, the healthier you will be.

This monumental task that you have placed before yourself of changing a lifelong belief system must be done first in baby-steps that become bigger steps that turn in to leaps as your body cries louder each day for raw foods.  Your reward will be perfect health and a disease free body when the transition is complete.  Your body will punish you when you sometimes stray and revert to your old deadly cooked-food ways.  It is tough love because your body knows what is right.  The more you consume raw foods, the more traumatic this punishment becomes as you realize once and for all what poison cooked foods really are.

Another important step we can make is to begin moving away from pre-packaged processed foods to fresh cooked foods.  It helps bring us out of the repetitious habit of our daily lives that shackles us to the cooked world.  It is merely habit to come home tired and look for something easy to prepare for dinner.  There is nothing easier than something that is already prepared and simply needs to be heated.  Of course the ultimate fast food is a raw food because it is immediately ready to eat at any time.

The next step would be to begin cooking your vegetables less and less, whether it is steaming, frying or baking.  Start by steaming them only half the time your normally do, then reduce the time until you are merely warming them.  If you keep the temperature of the vegetables below 105°F, you will not destroy the enzymes and other chemical nutrients in the food.  Any raw food can be raised to a temperature of 105°F without the fear of damaging its nutritional potential.  Many people miss warm food when first moving to the Raw-food Diet and if it makes you feel better to warm your food to 105°F or less, you should do it.

Juicing is another side door to the raw food lifestyle.  Juicing is a world unto itself.  The human body is essentially a juicer in the sense that it is the juice from plants that contains the nutrients that the body must extract.  Anyone seeking to truly obtain Great Health must include juicing as part of their daily protocol.  There are many types of juicers.  Most separate the juice from the fiber, a valuable and necessary part of the food.  Other juicers grind up the entire food, including the fiber.  These are preferable.

You can juice any fruit or vegetable except those that won’t juice and must be blended such as a banana.  Babies can begin consuming raw juices once they are weaned.  And they will drink any fresh juice you give them, especially if it contains a little sweet fruit.  You can also put a gram of Spirulina and Chlorella powder into the juice as well.  A weaned infant can be treated the same as an adult in regard to their diet as long as it is comprised of raw foods.

I transitioned to raw foods by using rice as 20 — 30% of my overall diet for about a year.  You can do the same thing with potatoes or other starchy carbohydrates.  I used only brown, red and black rice because they contain fiber and essential fatty acids, and therefore are healthier than white rice, which is high in gluten and creates a lot of mucus in the body.  Rice also tends to cause a lot of gas, which is created mainly in the large intestines and is the result of undigested starchy carbohydrates.  Foods that cause these problems become their own reason for removing them from your diet.

I slowly removed rice from my diet over the course of several months until I was eating it only once a week.  Eventually, I got rid of it completely.  Only giving up dairy products did more to remove mucus from my body.

 

It was the last profound positive change in my health I experienced, for now I was nearly 100% raw.
