The Natural Cure ADHD, ADD ‘They’ Don’t Want You to Know About

By Bob McCauley, CNC, MH

I recently blogged about John F. Kennedy being heavily medicated while he was president of the United States.  A question that was not posed in that blog is “How did that affect his judgment while he was president?”

A drug widely prescribed pharmaceutical (which is a civilized word for drug) for ADD and ADHD is Ritalin.  The Medical Dictionary states:

Methylphenidate (MPH) is an amphetamine-like prescription stimulant commonly used to treat Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) in children and adults. It is also one of the primary drugs used to treat symptoms of traumatic brain injury and the daytime drowsiness symptoms of narcolepsy and chronic fatigue syndrome. Brand names of drugs that contain methylphenidate include Ritalin® (Ritalina®, Rilatine®), Attenta®, Concerta® (a timed-release capsule), Metadate®, Methylin® and Rubifen®.

First, you should be aware that Ritalin is very similar to cocaine.  So when you start giving your 7 year old Ritalin you are essentially putting them on a drug that is very similar to a drug that countless users have lost their lives and families over.  However, where you find most of the Ritalin is on college campuses all over the country.  Ritalin is often prescribed “for assistance with studying” for college students.

I’m currently studying to become a Naturopathic Doctor, which is definitely one of the most difficult things I’ve ever done.  The Dissertation is proving to be a monster, given I need to reference every claim, fact or argument I put forth.  I live on a vegan diet of raw fruits and vegetables anchored by Spirulina and Chlorella, which I use for my protein.

I don’t have any concentration problems and I don’t take Ritalin. If I do have trouble concentrating I take some Bacopa with Chlorella Tablets.  Bacopa is an incredible herb and particularly when when the bacocides, the active chemical, is concentrated.  Bacopa is a one of the worst tasting herbs known, but when consumed with chlorella, it is better assimilated into the body, the bad taste is avoided and a person can take enough of it to notice a considerable difference.  If it works for me I’m sure it would work for school children and college students.  In fact, my 14 year old son has taken it on occasion and remarked how much his concentration improved when he did.  He was able to concentrate so much better in school on the days when he consumed chlorella and bacopa.

Here is a list of FDA drugs approved for concentration problems, some approved for 3 year old children.  Why not?

I Have NEVER Seen an ‘8’. Have you?

By Bob McCauley, CNC, MH

There are three numerical values for fresh produce sold in the United Stated:  4, 8 and 9.

  • 4 = Produce grown with herbicides, pesticides and/or fungicides.  Referred to as “Commercially Grown” Produce.
  • 8 = Genetically Modified Foods (GMO, or Genetically Modified Organism).
  • 9 = Organically Grown Produce without the use of chemicals of any kind.

It is a very simple system.  I like it.   I adore simplicity in and of itself.  And having identifier numbers for produce is exactly what we need to have if we can expect to know what we are buying because it is food, something we are going to put in our body that will either make us healthier or less healthy.  Seldom do things we put in our body have a neutral affect.

I choose to purchase 9 (organic) 90% of the time.  100% of the fruit I consume is organically grown, and 90% of the vegetables.  It costs a little more but that is my choice.  I would not touch a commercially grown.  However, I have never seen an ‘8’ GMO food sold in a store in the US.  We know for a fact that much of the corn and potatoes we are sold have been genetically modified in some way.  We know that at least 90% of the Soy grown in the US is GMO.  You would think that you would have run across one by now.

I believe that the corporations that are producing GMO foods from GMO seeds are refusing to identify that the foods they sell are Genetically Modified.  And no one is there to enforce it.  FDA swat teams are busy raiding Amish farms that sell raw milk at 5am, so how could we possibly expect them to insist that Monsanto, Du Pont and all the other companies that produce and sell GMO seeds and produce, do what they are required by law to do: IDENTIFY THEIR PRODUCE with a 4, 8 or 9.  So they get away with it, year in and year out.  So much for Truth-in-Labeling laws.

A great documentary I would recommend is Fed Up (2002) it details the GMO world and its potential dangers.  The problem with GMO food is that it has been genetically changed by humans slicing in and/or removing gene strings.  Who knows what this will do to human health.  I certainly don’t want to be the guinea pig to see what they might or might not do to us.  I wonder if those individuals who work at companies such as Monsanto and DuPont actually eat GMO foods.  I would like to see a documentary following around employees of the GMO companies eating the GMO foods their companies produce.  Now that would be good reality TV in my mind.

I have never seen a fruit or vegetable in a grocery store in the US with an identifier sticker that begins with an ‘8’.  Have you?

One Man’s “Weeds” Often End Up In My Dinner Plate

By Bob McCauley, CNC, MH

“What is a weed? A plant whose virtues
have not yet been discovered.”
~
Ralph Waldo Emerson

We spent $1 billion each year trying to wipe out some of the most evil-looking, poisonous, disgusting plants on Earth: the Dandelion.  At least that is what you would think about a plant that we spend that amount of money on trying to get rid of.  Dandelion has a pretty flower and is an incredibly healthy food.  When the Mayflower arrived in 1620, there were no dandelions in North America. By 1671, they were everywhere. They were introduced to America by European immigrants whose cultures used dandelions as part of their regular diet.

Here are a few “weeds” that I eat from my yard, wait all winter for and savor when they at long last arrive in summer.

Lambs Quarter (also called Fat Hen or quelite de ceniza).  This is one of my most favorite foods in the world.  I love to eat Lambs Quarter.  It’s almost impossible to cultivate yet comes up wild all over the place, especially in ground that has been disturbed or torn up.  I eat it nearly every day during the summer.  I take it directly out of my garden, and I have never once planted it.  To get Lambs Quarter to grow anywhere in your yard or garden simply tear up a little plot of earth and leave it alone for a while.  Lambs Quarter is very opportunistic and this is where it likes to grow, in areas where the soil has been disturbed and/or torn up.  Seemingly out of nowhere, Lambs Quarter appears.

This food is very low in saturated fat and cholesterol. It is also a good source of niacin, folate, iron, magnesium, phosphorus, and a very good source of dietary fiber, protein, vitamin a, vitamin c, thiamin, riboflavin, vitamin b6, calcium, potassium, copper, sodium and manganese.  Lambs Quarter is a good source of all 9 essential amino acids in the proper ratios.

Purslane This is another plant that is hard to cultivate yet is all over my yard and throughout my garden.  It actually has a little bit of a strange taste and texture.  But it is a powerhouse of PUFA’s – poly-unsaturated fatty acids.  A green leafy vegetable, low in calories (just 16 kcal/100g) and fats; but is rich in dietary fiber, vitamins and minerals.  Fresh leaves contain surprisingly more Omega-3 fatty acids (α-linolenic acid) than any other leafy vegetable plant. 100 grams of fresh Purslane leaves provides about 350 mg of Omega-linolenic acid. Research studies shows that consumption of foods rich in Omega-3 fatty acids may reduce the risk of coronary heart disease, stroke and also help prevent development of ADHD, autism, and other developmental differences in children.   It is an excellent source of Vitamin A, (1320 IU/100 g, provides 44% of RDA) one of the highest among green leafy vegetables. Vitamin A is a known powerful natural antioxidant and is essential for vision. This vitamin is also required to maintain healthy mucus membranes and skin. Consumption of natural vegetables and fruits rich in vitamin A known to help protect from lung and oral cavity cancers.  Purslane is also a rich source of vitamin C, and some B-complex vitamins like riboflavin, niacin, pyridoxine and carotenoids, as well as dietary minerals, such as iron, magnesium, calcium, potassium and manganese.  Also present in Purslane are two types of betalain alkaloid pigments, the reddish beta-cyanins and the yellow beta-xanthins. Both of these pigment types are potent anti-oxidants and have been found to have anti-mutagenic (enhancing mutation resistant) properties in laboratory studies. [Proc. West. Pharmacol. Soc. 45: 101-103 (2002)]

Michael Pollan, PhD, author and food expert, called lambs quarters and Purslane “two of the most nutritious plants in the world.” I agree.  His book, The Omnivore’s Dilemma, is one of the best books I have read on food.

Red Clover. Red Clover, an immune building herb, is great to use powdered (sprinkle it on salads) and it can also be used as a tea. It’s also a source of nutrients including calcium, chromium, potassium, thiamine, magnesium, niacin, phosphorus and vitamin C.

Stinging Nettle (parts used: leaves).  Nettle tea has been widely used to combat intestinal weakness, diarrhea and malnutrition. It also acts as a diuretic and is said to be good for treating kidney weakness and bladder infections.

Dandelion (lion’s tooth)
It is low in Saturated Fat, and very low in Cholesterol. It is also a good source of Folate, Magnesium, Phosphorus and Copper, and a very good source of Dietary Fiber, Vitamin A, Vitamin C, Vitamin E (Alpha Tocopherol), Vitamin K, Thiamin, Riboflavin, Vitamin B6, Calcium, Iron, Potassium and Manganese.

Its leaves are packed with numerous health benefiting flavonoids such as carotene-β, carotene-α, lutein, cryptoxanthin and zeaxanthin. Consumption of natural foods rich in vitamin-A and flavonoids (carotenes) helps protects the body from lung and oral cavity cancers. Zeaxanthin has photo-filtering functions and protects retina from UV rays.

The herb is a good source of minerals like potassium, calcium, manganese, iron, and magnesium. Potassium is an important component of cell and body fluids, which helps regulate heart rate and blood pressure. Iron is essential for red blood cell production. Manganese is used by the body as a co-factor for the antioxidant enzyme, superoxide dismutase.

The leaves have the highest vitamin A content of all greens. Herbalists say that dandelion root heads the list of excellent foods for the liver because of its relatively high amounts of choline which is an important nutrient for the liver. Dandelion leaves are a diuretic, meaning that they help flush excess water from the body. Dandelion flowers are well endowed with lecithin, a nutrient that has been proven useful in various liver ailments.

Dandelion herb contains notable nutrients and is a great source of nutrition during the winter months.

This “humble” and often despised herb provides (% of RDA/100g):
9% of dietary fiber,
19% of vitamin B-6 (pyridoxine),
20% of Riboflavin,
58% of vitamin C,
338% of vitamin A,
649% of vitamin K,
39% of iron and
19% of calcium.

The roots possess strong antiviral properties and help stabilize blood sugar levels.  The root acts as an appetite stimulant, helps promote digestion and gastrointestinal health, encourages the growth of healthy bacteria, and alleviates flatulence.  It is cleansing and healing to the gallbladder. Typically, the roots or juice from the leaves are used for this.  Dandelion may help lower bad cholesterol (LDL) and raise good cholesterol (HDL).  The leaves help support kidney function and act as a diuretic.  The roots promote liver detoxification.  Dandelion also alleviates the bloating associated with PMS.

They can also be taken for gallbladder problems and constipation. Unlike traditional diuretics, dandelions do not leach potassium from the body because they themselves have such a high potassium content.  Dandelions are good for rheumatics and gout.  The latex from the leaves and stalks can be used to treat corns and warts.

The Dandelion’s pallid tube
Astonishes the Grass,
And Winter instantly becomes
An infinite Alas
The tube uplifts a signal Bud
And then a shouting Flower,
The Proclamation of the Suns
That sepulchral is over.

~ Emily Dickinson

I couldn’t have said it better.

Measuring Body pH

by Bob McCauley, CNC, MH

pH is a measurement of the relative concentration of positive and negative ions.  When they are present in equal quantities we have reached a state of equilibrium within the body and our pH will be 7.0.  There are two ways to measure body pH, which should not be confused with blood pH.  The blood always maintains pH between 7.25 – 7.45.  If it falls out of that range the body will quickly go into shock and death will follow soon after.  Anything that does get into the bloodstream outside of that pH is immediately pushed out into the body’s tissue.

Body pH
The pH of saliva and urine is a much more accurate measure of overall body pH.  I believe that the pH of the body should be approximately 7.0, which is neutral.  There are many opinions of what the pH of the body should actually be.  I have read as low as 6.3 and as high as 7.2.  If you are sick your body pH will be low.  The sicker you are the lower your body pH will be.  For instance, if you have advanced cancer your body pH will most likely be near 5.0.

Tools for measuring pH
Body pH can be measured using pH paper, pH indicator liquid (phenol red) or a digital pH meter in which a probe is placed into a liquid that measures the electrical resistance of positive and negative electrons in the water.  These are quite accurate for measuring body pH, however digital pH meters require constant calibration.

Measuring with Saliva
The mouth tends to be slightly alkaline, which is why it is a poor barometer of the overall pH of the body.  The saliva is a more accurate measure of the body from the waist up, which includes the upper digestive tract.  Therefore, it is not a good measure of overall body pH.  pH test strips are the only way to test saliva pH.  Many elderly people have a very alkaline mouth, more than the average person, because they no longer produce hydrochloric acid (HCL) in their stomach which has caused their mouths to become more and more alkaline.  Medical professionals often mistakenly see the high pH of their elderly patients and believe they are too alkaline.  This is a good example of why we should not use saliva as a barometer of the body’s true pH.

Measuring with Urine
Many things can affect body pH throughout each day, such as diet and stress levels.  In order to get an accurate determination of body pH, the urine should be measured first thing in the morning each day for at least one week, although a month would better.  As you continue to measure your pH each morning, a profile, or “moving average,” will emerge that will be far more accurate than taking a single reading.  Urine pH can be measured using pH paper, pH indicator liquid (phenol red) or a digital pH meter.

Raw Foods, Great Health and Fanaticism

By Bob McCauley, CNC, MH

Some of us have decided to put the right foods in our body so we can obtain true health, not the kind of health that everyone else talks about where you mention that you are not sick then knock on wood as though you have simply been lucky up to this point.  These are the people who inevitably end up in the hands of doctors.  Those of us who consistently want to consume healthy foods are often labeled as “fanatics” obsessed about “eating correctly”.  There is even a term that has been invented for someone like myself who wants to stay healthy by consuming only what actually belongs in the body, Orthorexia Nervosa, which literally means “fixation on righteous eating”.[i] Those who consistently eat right and put in their body only what naturally belongs there are labeled “health food junkies”.

People who move to a Raw-food Diet sometimes do fixate on food, how it is prepared and tastes.  We are a society obsessed with food, which is why there are dozens of diet books on the market explaining how we can lose the weight that the hundreds of cookbooks instruct us to prepare in seductive ways.  Virtually every social gathering involves food, from weddings to funerals to parties of every kind, especially those around holidays.  Food and our obsession with it has been around for thousands of years.  Obsessing over raw foods is only the latest wrinkle on that tradition.

I will be the first to admit that obsessing over anything is not a good thing, but first we must define what an obsession is.  For instance, although we can obsess over consuming raw foods, how they taste and are prepared, if we simply eat a broad array of raw foods we will never be sick.  If that is the case, then I would rather obsess over raw foods than have cancer, diabetes or heart disease and find myself at the mercy of doctors who have no clue how to heal me.

Some raw foodists won’t eat foods that are chopped-up because it causes them to become oxidized, thus the energy force of the food is diminished.  Others will not eat hybrid foods such as carrots, bananas or anything grown inside a farmer’s fence because they have been changed by cross-breeding and therefore are not completely natural foods.  Others will not touch foods from the nightshade family, such as tomatoes, potatoes and eggplant because they believe those are somehow harmful as well.  I believe all this is taking things too far when considering the garbage the average person regularly puts in his/her body.  Although I have my preferences, I will eat any raw food that is not known to be poisonous such as water hemlock, foxglove or certain mushrooms.

If someone has decided to only eat apples, this could be construed as a harmful obsession because eating only apples and nothing else is unhealthy and will eventually lead to disease.  Cooked foods are an addiction and like any addiction we must remove these addictive substances from our lives.  All addicts know they should not expose themselves to their addiction because the temptation is too great, whether it is alcohol, drugs, cigarettes, gambling, soft drinks or chocolate.  However, to suggest that you should not be too strict with your diet and eat what you want instead of what your body requires is another way of suggesting that it is alright to be weak and give in to the harmful foods we are addicted to.  It is the sentiment of an enabler, someone who wants you to believe that foods which lead to disease are okay to eat and that a strict diet of raw foods is obsessive, damaging and unhealthy.  They say this because successfully moving to a Raw-food Diet is something that they probably can’t manage to do themselves.  If we are determined to obtain Great Health and know that moving to a Raw-food Diet is the only way to achieve it, then we are brave and smart to do so, not obsessed.

Eating foods that are detrimental to our health is a “deathist” mentality, meaning that since everyone is going to die one day, living any way other than sensuously is foolish and naive.  They believe that life is about pleasure more than anything else.  Pleasure should be just one of the many components of our lives, not its central focus.  Spirituality, morality, ethics, compassion and the satisfaction that comes from work, achievements and human relationships of every kind must also have necessary weight and authority in our lives.

In fact, Messier Rochefoucauld’s quotation at the beginning of this section is itself one of a weakling who has decided he will eat whatever he pleases, a slave to the whim of his taste buds, self-condemned to the inevitability of disease and an early demise.  Perhaps one even could say that it is the statement of a fanatic.

Randy Couture Endorses the Bob McCauley’s Health Protocol

By Bob McCauley, CNC, MH

I first met Randy Couture at the Arnold Sports Festival in Columbus, Ohio, in 2004. I was introduced to Randy by a friend (Fairfax Hackley – “Hack”) who had brought him in for the weekend activities. My background is in traditional martial arts (Tae Kwon Do) and I was unfamiliar with the sport of mixed martial arts.

What struck me about Randy was the high level of conditioning and fighting skills he displayed at his age, which is 46 (2009). His ring accomplishments are too numerous to mention. What has stuck out about him has been how he managed to fight, stay healthy and recover from injuries. As a long time martial artist and runner I was curious about what he did. Hack called me and said that he had been speaking to Randy for quite some time about water ionizers and the superfoods Spirulina and Chlorella. Hack said that he would arrange for Randy to give me a call and pitch my health protocol to him.

I talked to him a little bit about Spirulina, Chlorella and Ionized Water and explained how they can help anyone to live to their potential. With Randy, that would be training so he could fight to his full capacity, both mentally and physically. I have always maintained that anyone can do anything physically at any age if they want to do it.

I explained to Randy that he needed to Hydrate Alkalize and Detoxify his body if he wanted to be truly healthy. That is what my health protocol is all about: drinking enough water, bringing our pH into balance and removing substances that don’t belong in the body (toxins).

A few months after he’d been using the Water Ionizer, Chlorella and Spirulina, Randy sent me a video endorsing the Watershed Wellness Health Protocol .  I didn’t even ask him to do a video for us and he came through anyway.  It’s the kind of down to earth guy Randy is.  It was a proud moment and one of personal triumph for me because I was able to connect with a world-class athlete and introduce him to my health protocol, one that exclusively promotes natural health. I knew that if Randy liked it, so would his many followers and protégés. Other martial artists and octagon fighters would discover what Randy is doing for his health and want to do the same. As an athlete myself, I know that adopting my health protocol has allowed me to perform so much better than I would have if I hadn’t done so. At 51, I don’t have any soreness in my joints. I am not prone to injuries. I run 3 – 5 miles and practice Tae Kwon Do techniques daily. I am not slowing down at all. In fact, I feel I am still building. Each year I manage to set a new record for the courses I run.  I know that if I can, anyone can do it. It only takes the desire and will to follow through.

I am filled with pride to know that a world famous athlete, Randy Couture, will tell others of the results he got when he followed the most natural health protocol around.

The Biography Channel did Randy’s Story recently, which goes into great detail about his life, struggles, triumphs and disappointments.  It really does Randy justice.

Randy Couture is a mixed martial arts fighter, sports commentator, actor, businessperson. Born on June 22, 1963, in Lynnwood, Washington. Known as “The Natural” and “Captain America,” Randy Couture has become a legend in the world of mixed martial arts fighting. He developed an interest in mixed martial arts at the age of 10 and went on to become a skilled wrestler. After graduating from high school, Couture joined the U.S. Army. He spent six years in the service.

An Olympic hopeful, Couture was selected as an alternate for the U.S. Wrestling Team for the 1988, 1992, and 1996 Summer Games. He also worked at Oregon State University as an assistant wrestling and strength conditioning coach. At the age of 33, Couture began his professional fighting career with the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) in 1997. He made his debut in May that was billed as UFC 13, during which he defeated two heavyweight opponents—Tony Halme and Steven Graham.

At UFC 15, Couture knocked out opponent Vitor “Phenom” Belfort for his third straight win. His hot streak continued with a decision win over Maurice Smith for the heavyweight title in December 1997. After this victory, Couture ended up losing his next two matches—against Enson Inoue and then Mikhail Illoukhine—by submission.

In late 2000 and early 2001, Couture participated in a series of matches as part of the King of Kings II tournament in Japan. He first defeated Jeremy Horn by unanimous decision and then won his match with Ryushi Yanagisawa by majority. After another unanimous decision in his favor in his fight against Tsuyoshi Kohsaka, Couture advanced to his final fight at the tournament. He lost to Valentijn Overeem, having to surrender while being caught in Overeem’s guillotine choke hold. Describing his experiences in Japan, Couture explained to the Los Angeles Times that “The tournament format was tough. You could prepare for the guy you’d fight first, but you didn’t know who was coming next. Another thing that made it tough was the fatigue factor if you had to go the distance your first fight, but your opponent had a first-round win.”

Vegans Are Wimps . . .

By Bob McCauley, CNC, MH

. . . or so they would like you to think.  Admittedly, a lot of vegans look weak and sickly, but that’s because they don’t get enough protein and therefore don’t know how to live healthier on a plant-based diet.  I do and I look healthy.   So does Thor Bazler, author of Raw Power. I love this book because it shatters the myth that veganism is for wimps and girls who think eating meat is “yucky”. Thor tells it like it is, and he’s a healthy looking man who can bench press with the best of them.  My kind of guy, because I like do the same thing.  I like to spar Tae Kwon Do each Friday evening and I can outlast almost anyone on the floor.  And like Thor, I’m a raw food vegan and have been for 15 years.  Veganism is for the strong because it takes strength to live and eat that way.

“Long-time authority on raw foods, superfoods and truly natural bodybuilding, Thor Bazler outlines numerous techniques and strategies on how to gain muscle and strength completely naturally, eating a diet of raw foods and superfoods.” – Raw Power

Thor is a weight lifter himself and has seen the value of raw foods and how they can produce muscle if that is your desire.

“There is no field of science more clouded by misinformation than nutrition (even most doctors don’t know what the human diet should consist of), so I wanted to put together an easy-to-follow program for myself and others, a program based upon what has worked for me and many others.”  –  Thor Bazler

The art of being wise is knowing what to overlook!

Here are a few more tips from Thor:

* Get outdoors in fresh air and the sun and experience nature

* Exercise vigorously

* Associate with positive people

* Think powerful thoughts

* Delve into the mysteries of life

* Avoid mass media, television and other time- and mind-wasters

* Live in a place that is conducive to good health (fresh, clean air, low crime rate, local recreational opportunities, etc.)

* Have (or find) a really cool, balanced partner to share life with

Why Meat Kills

The reason that eating animal protein is one of the worst things for our health is simple. Let’s first establish that everyone always cooks their animal protein.  Rarely does anyone eat raw meat, fish, eggs or dairy, although there is a strong movement to consume raw dairy, in particular raw goat’s milk.   I am not against eating raw animal protein, but it certainly is not necessary for us to consume it if we wish to be healthy.  Eating raw animal protein is known as Paleo Diet.

The problem with animal protein is that it is a pre-formed protein chain of amino acids that are then brought to high temperatures during the cooking process.  The higher the temperature and the longer the animal protein is cooked at these temperatures, the more harmful the animal protein becomes to our health.  Although it is not desirable, exposing plant proteins (unstructured amino acids) to high temperatures does not have the same deleterious effects on our health.  A Harvard study showed that the consumption of red meat has been linked to the increased risk of Type II diabetes.[1]

“Regular consumption of red meat, especially processed, is associated with an increased risk for type 2 diabetes. The findings are important given the rising epidemic of diabetes and the increasing consumption of red meat.” – Frank B. Hu, MD, PhD

I always suspected this about protein structures and it was confirmed to me in a book called  Heal With Amino Acids and Nutrients.[2]

I was reading the book in my studies to become a Certified Nutritional Consultant, and there it was in black and white, exactly what I had always suspected and that is that cooked, pre-formed protein structures become chemically scrambled and many of the peptide bonds that link the amino acids together are completely destroyed.  This turns the protein structure into mush, unrecognizable and therefore unusable by the body.  The more it is cooked, the more dangerous it becomes.  Cooking animal protein at extremely high temperature also creates plastic-like substances (polymers) call acrylamides, which of course are toxic, extremely unhealthy and therefore do not belong in the body.

The same problem would not occur if plant protein is cooked, although I certainly would not recommend it if it can be avoided.  If you want to consume meat, fish, eggs or dairy, do so with the realization that you are consuming them strictly for the taste of it, not for the nutrition.  A smaller handful of Spirulina and/or Chlorella will provide your body with all the nutrition it needs.

Nothing causes more disease than eating cooked animal protein other than people don’t keep themselves properly hydrated, meaning they simply do not drink enough water, and/or they don’t drink the right kind of water.  The right water is ionized water, spring water, mineral water or well-filtered tap water.  Distilled and reverse osmosis is NOT the right kind of water we should consume.

My effort, as always, is to educate people about health, and not to suggest that we make people stop eating animal protein.  I don’t care what people eat – it’s none of my business.  However I do offer some advice to those who want to listen, and that is to limit, if not entirely eliminate, animal protein of all kinds from your diet if your desire is to be healthy.  If you replace animal with algae, Spirulina and Chlorella, you will do an about face and quickly start moving closer to that goal.

Mercola Puts On His His “Water Dunce” Hat Again

by Bob McCauley, CNC, MH

Just when I think I’m done talking about Dr. Mercola for a while he comes out with another ridiculous pronouncement about water, demonstrating he doesn’t understand the basics of human health.  This time around he is denouncing the practice of drinking at least 8 glasses of water each day. It’s now been confirmed beyond any reasonable doubt – by an obscure Scottish medical doctor – that the notion of drinking a lot of water daily is a stupid practice based on myths and superstition.  The editorial, which was NOT peer reviewed, was endorsed in principle by Mercola none-the-less.

Dr. Margaret McCartney, a general practitioner from Scotland, says that the common health advice that you should drink six to eight cups of water each day is “thoroughly debunked nonsense”.

Dr. Who?  Exactly what is Dr. Margaret McCartney’s credentials on water?  I must confess that this is the first time in my life I have ever heard of anyone from Scotland offering health advice.  From what I have seen thus far, I will certainly not be looking for more if the best they come up with is not to drink water.   I can not think of any worse health advice than to tell people not to drink at least 8 glasses of water each day.

To go on the record, as I have countless times, I recommend that people drink 1 – 1.5 gallons (4 – 6 liters) of water each day, never around mealtime – 30 minutes before, during and 60 minutes after.  You will have a lot better digestion because you are not washing out your digestive track and disrupting the delicate balance of enzymes, chemicals and pH balance that proper digestion requires.  I sometimes drink 2 gallons (8 liters) on a hot day where I work out and go for a Far Infrared Sauna session after, which requires 1.5 liters unto itself.

Mercola sides with some no-name doctor from Scotland confirming what I have said for years, doctors know about medicine; they know nothing about health. It’s because medicine and health have nothing to do with each other.  Gabriel Cousens is a medical doctor, and that is certainly NOT what I admire about him.  I admire Dr. Cousens as a vegan, a raw foodist and a spiritual mentor.  The fact that he’s a medical doctor has nothing to do with it one way or another.  Dr. Fred Bisci, a respected colleague of mine, is another example of a Medical Doctor who understands what true health is all about.

And here we have Dr. Mercola essentially regurgitating what an obscure medical doctor from Scotland – that no one has ever heard of – to tell us we have all been duped and to stop drinking water.  What idiocy.  I guess doctors stick together because it legitimizes their profession, or at least they think it does.  I wonder sometimes if Mercola knows anything about true health.  He is good at pointing out flaws in the medical establishment but in the end he goes right along with most of it.  The truth is that most doctors probably agree with Mercola’s attacks on the medical establishment because they are legitimate and called for.  Mercola calls out the weaknesses and hypocrisy of the medical establishment, the AMA, the pharmaceutical industry, the FDA, the government’s awkward involvement in medicine as a whole as well, including the crippling bureaucracy of the medical establishment.

“Appropriate hydration is particularly important for the elderly and the very young and for most people it is better to obtain most fluid intake from water, whether bottled or tap water, than from other beverages (especially sugar containing and alcoholic beverages). … MacCartney [sic] focused on the more whacky claims made for water and appeared to cherry pick her references to make a story.”

So now telling people to drink a lot of water is a “whacky claim”.  If you make that statement about the most important part of human health and get away with it, you can get away with any ridiculous statement about health and go unchallenged.  The

Mercola then attempts to use the rare and extreme incidences of hyponatremia, extremely low salt levels in the body, as an excuse to denounce the practice of staying properly hydrated.  Hyponatremia is the result of drinking too much water in a short period of time.  It is known as water intoxication.  Hyponatremia is dangerous and has resulted in death in the past.  This is why I recommend to Never drink more than one liter of water per hour, and no more than 8 liters per day.   This is a very simple rule and easy to remember.  Just because people sometimes hurt themselves with knives doesn’t mean we should outlaw them, and similarly, just because people wrongly drink too much water in a short period of time doesn’t mean we should use that as a pretense to not stay hydrated.  If you eat the right kind of salt, such as Himalayan Salt or unprocessed Celtic sea salt, you will not experience hyponatremia.

Mercola states: . . . your urine should be a very light-colored yellow. If it is a deep, dark yellow then you are likely not drinking enough water. If your urine is scant or if you haven’t urinated in several hours, that too is an indication that you’re not drinking enough. (Based on the results from a few different studies, a healthy person urinates on average about seven or eight times a day.)

As the title of the blog declares, this is not the first time Mercola has donned his “water dunce” cap, and I’m getting tired of writing about it, but unfortunately people read and believe Mercola on a host of issues.  His fans are right to listen to Mercola on some health issues, but this is not one of them.  Mercola puts on his Water Dunce cap with another no-name water filter salesman and denounces Ionized Water. I cringed to watch Mercola’s interview of this “water expert” that no one has ever heard of and has been in the water business a whopping 10 years.  For the record, I am a Water Supply Operator in the State of Michigan with D-5 and S-5 Certifications as a Water Specialist.  There only five of us in the State of Michigan who do not work for the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality.   I have been in the bottled water business since 1993, and started working for my father, Dr. Robert McCauley, at 15.  My father had a PhD is environmental engineering from MIT, the MIT in Cambridge, MA.  He taught at Michigan State University for 15 years then ran Wolverine Engineers of Mason, MI, for 18 years.  Ionized water is the healthiest substance we can consume.

Here is a American Journal of Clinical Nutrition study found that children don’t drink enough water.  In the study only 15 to 60 percent of boys and 10 to 54 percent of girls, depending on age, drank the minimum about of water recommended by the U.S. Institute of Medicine.  Drs. McCartney and Mercola apparently don’t think much of the U.S. Institute of Medicine and the standards they set.

Thomas Sanders, a professor of nutrition and dietetics from King’s College London wasn’t in agreement with McCartney and said in a rebuttal:

“Appropriate hydration is particularly important for the elderly and the very young and for most people it is better to obtain most fluid intake from water, whether bottled or tap water, than from other beverages (especially sugar containing and alcoholic beverages). … MacCartney [sic] focused on the more whacky claims made for water and appeared to cherry pick her references to make a story.”

Mercola does valuable work and he has an informative website.  He also sells products.  So I do.  However, I sell products that are entirely different from Dr. Mercola’s products because they actually lead to great health.  Other than chlorella and Astaxanthin, almost everything Mercola promotes and sells is the same “me-too health products” that are more enablers than products that actually lead to health.

I don’t want to see Mercola gone from the web, however I would like to see him become better educated about what truly leads to health, including the most fundamental aspect of health, in fact the very cornerstone of health, that of drinking enough of the right kind of water. Mercola sadly just does not get it, at all!

Faux Superfoods of the Raw World

by Bob McCauley, CNC, MH

A recent blog by Kevin Gianni stated the obvious: lots of food promoted as “superfoods” by the raw food community are actually not healthy at all. Some are healthier than their cooked food counterparts, but for the most part they are unhealthy.  The list has been obvious to me for years.  And I’m glad that raw foodists such as Gianni and his wife are catching on.  Just because someone sells a “superfood” doesn’t mean it actually is a superfood.

Here is the list: Agave, Raw Cocoa, Nama Shoyu, heavy nut dishes. What a shock!  Anyone can figure out what is healthy and what isn’t.

Agave: Natural fructose, aka sugar.  Better than refined white sugar, but we all know that in the end, sugar is sugar.  Sugar is NOT a superfood by any stretch of the imagination.  I use agave often and I use it sparingly.  It happens to be one of Nutrition By Natalie’s powerhouse foods.  Natalie seems like a nice person, but she’s a joke when it comes to health advice.

Nama Shoyu: Aka Soy Sauce, only the fermented kind.  I have absolutely nothing good to say about soy.  Soy is a disaster on a number of levels.  If you are going to eat soy, fermented soy is the best.  Nama Shoyu, soy sauce, Bragg’s Amino acids, is called for in countless raw food receipts.  Raw foodist have pushed it for years, apparently unaware that it’s not a true health food.  It’s extremely high in sodium, which causes swelling and other reactions in many people, not unlike the reaction some people have to MSG (Monosodium glutamate).  Nama Shoyu is not a superfood, let alone even a healthy food.  Use this stuff sparingly.

Raw Cocoa: David Wolfe has made claims about cacao being a superfood for years.  Both cacao and coffee contain caffeine and theobromine (food of the gods).  Both are stimulants, not unlike Klamath Lake AFA blue-green algae, although there are nutrients in both AFA and Cocoa. I don’t feel so good eating too much cocoa or chocolate.  Use them both in moderation.

Too many Nuts.  One of the problems people have with moving to a raw food diet is filling their stomachs and satisfying their appetites, which is easier to do on a cooked food diet.  Consuming too much nut fat, especially all at once is not healthy and a cashew or pine nut-based pizza crust should be consumed in small quantities.  Raw nuts, especially macadamia or pine nuts, are fattening when consumed in excess.  Nut Deserts need to be consumed in great moderation since they have so much fat and sugar.  I do speaking engagements from time to time, many of them raw food potlucks, and I have had some amazing raw deserts. Chicago Raw has the best raw desert I have ever had. Polly and Carole are incredible chefs.

Gianni mentions maca not being a superfood.  Maca is a powerful food that has herb-like qualities and almost anyone can take it.  Whether it is a superfood is another matter.  It definitely is an excellent food, although I don’t believe it is a superfood.

The flavor is not bad at all.  I believe there are two great superfoods that are inexpensive, highly nutritious, stable and easy to produce.  They are Spirulina and Chlorella. These are the two true superfoods from which all other foods follow.  If you can say raw maca is not a superfood you could say the same about Ginkgo Biloba.  The truth is that both are superfoods when consumed raw and fresh.  Each are unique to any other food on the planet.  Some raw foods are more powerful than others, garlic vs. romaine lettuce for example.  But even organic romaine lettuce can become a powerful superfood if you let it flower and consume the top of it.  That’s power.

I have to say that overall I like what Gianni’s doing.  I don’t agree with him on everything but he is trying to educate people about true health while being opened to new ideas.  That’s what I do too!
