What’s in Your Tablets? Spirulina platensis and Chlorella pyrenoidosa

There are several different species of these two algae, however the ones that I speak of in this book are Spirulina Platensis and Chlorella Pyrenoidosa. Another Chlorella product found on the market is chlorella vulgaris, which is nutritionally inferior to its powerful cousin Pyrenoidosa.  The kind of alga found in swimming pools closely resembles chlorella vulgaris, which does not have the broad array of nutrients that Pyrenoidosa has, nor its incredible dietary fiber.  The Chlorella Growth Factor (CGF) in vulgaris is miniscule compared to PyrenoidosaVulgaris is cultivated by fermentation instead of grown with sunlight.  Its growing time is only three days whereas Pyrenoidosa takes seven days to mature because it is a far more complex whole food with a much greater array of nutrients than vulgaris.  Cultivating a food with sunlight is a much more natural way to grow a food compared to simply fermenting it.  For one thing, chlorophyll cannot be created without sunlight, which is not used in the fermentation process.  You will pay more, but Chlorella Pyrenoidosa is well worth the extra money.

Spirulina Platensis is grown in Taiwan and India and has been refined and enhanced through thousands of generations of the same strain until it has been tweaked to nutritional perfection.  Aquaculturists select from millions of Spirulina cells in order to develop superior strains of microalgae that are more concentrated in nutrients such as beta carotene, iron, amino acids, calcium and numerous others.

A tremendous amount of scientific research has been done on both Spirulina and Chlorella from universities and medical institutions around the world.  They are also used globally as livestock feed.  Once tableted, they will last up to a year when refrigerated and even longer if vacuum-packed.  Both have been proven to be one of the best solutions to world hunger problems.

The Chlorella cell wall must be opened in order to get at the nutrients.   Spirulina is not a plant so it has no nucleus and its cell wall is comprised of complex polysaccharides.

Which One You Should Take

Even though the nutritional profile of Spirulina and Chlorella are quite similar, they are completely different foods, as different as apples and oranges. Although many of the nutrients in these foods are identical, those same nutrients will assimilate and benefit the body in slightly different ways.  This is why we should attempt to get as many different types of foods into our diet as possible.

Spirulina is a nitrogen-based blue-green algae and has the predominant odor of seaweed.  Chlorella is a green algae that is oxygen-based and has the predominant odor of fresh grass.  Chlorella gets its name from the high amount of chlorophyll in it, up to 10 times that of  Spirulina, which is itself quite high in chlorophyll.  Chlorella belongs to a class of algae called chlorophyta.

Spirulina is an extremely high energy food, great before a workout.  It also is excellent for the treatment of arthritis.  It is in a class of algae called cyanobacteria.  As strains of algae, chlorophyta and cyanobacteria could not be more different from one another, which is why it is a hoax to suggest that you can cross breed them into a new species. Anyone with a scientific background in algae culture knows that it is impossible to cross a bacteria with a plant, such is the same as crossing a animal with a plant.

Hoax Chlorella Cryptomonadales

An algae product known as Cryptomonadales is grown in Taiwan and marketed throughout Asia, Australia and North America.  The claims made about this strain of chlorella, such as how it is grown and what strain it actually is, are ridiculous.   The algae that they say is grown is a strain known as Chlorella sorokiniana, which is named after the researcher who discovered it, Constantine Sorokin.

Chlorella sorokiniana is a thermopilic algae that thrives in warm water at temperatures of 100 – 107 degrees F (40 – 42 degrees C).  Most Chlorella strains are grown at much lower temperatures, around 55 – 80 degrees F (15 – 22 degrees C).  The biggest problem with Chlorella are the pheophorbides, an derivative of chlorophyll, chemical structures that are dangerous to our health if consumed in large quantities.  Pheophorbides must be controlled during the spray drying process.  Measured in milligrams as a percent of the food per grams with 60mg/100 grams being the limit allowed by law. Watershed Chlorella has a level of 27 – 30 mg pheophorbides.  Some Chlorella producers have over 180 mg pheophorbides, well over the maximum allowable contamination level.  Therefore, this chlorella cannot be sold for consumption alone but must be combined with other algae such as Spirulina in order to bring the pheophorbide to acceptable levels.  More than 50 chlorella companies in Taiwan went out of business in the 1970’s and 80’s because they could not control the Pheophorbide levels in the chlorella they were producing.

 

Chlorella pyrenoidosa contains Alpha Linolenlic Acid (ALA), another PUFA that that is an essential nutrient, meaning that it is required by body and must be consumed since the body cannot produce it.

Cryptomonadales claim:Peroxisome Proliferator Activated Receptors Crypto Power™ Chlorella Cryptomonadales® Chlorella Sorokiniana The only known algae in the world containing significant amounts of all three naturally occurring Alpha, Beta, and Gamma PPARs.”

Chlorella - Nutritional Analysis - Spec Sheet-page-001Chlorella sorokiniana contains both ALA and Beta linolenic acid (BLA), however only spirulina has gamma linolenic acid (GLA).  The claim by the producers of cryptomonadales that they have combined Chlorella sorokiniana with Spirulina plantenis into one strain of algae is completely false because this is simply not possible.  Spirulina is not an algae, but rather a cyanobacteria (blue bacteria) that is both animal and vegetable since it exhibits both characteristics regarding its biological classification. The blue in spirulina is phycocyanin, a powerful antioxidant.  Phyco means algae and cyanin means blue.  But Spirulina does not have a nucleus and therefore cannot be classified a plant and why it is classified as a cyanobacterium, or blue bacteria.

The reason this is important is because we know that it is impossible to cross a plant with WWC_Spirulina-Spec_Sheet-INGREDIENTSan animal, in this case a bacteria with an algae.  It would be like crossing a dog with a strain of corn.  There has been speculation that they have gene-spliced these two together, fusing them into a new species.  If that is true then it is a result of genetic modification (GMO), commonly known as franken-food because it is a food that has been tinkered with by man.  When man tinkers with nature rather than mold it to his benefit, things tend to go wrong.   That is meaning of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, that tinkering with nature will result in a catastrophe.

What the producers of cryptomonadales fail to produce is a Certificate of Analysis (COA).  A COA is provided with every batch of chlorella and spirulina that is produced. Algae products are not permitted to be sold without a COA, which is true of Herbal Extracts such as Ginkgo Biloba.   I would never purchase and/or sell a chlorella that did not have a COA and complete nutritional analysis such as this one.  Chlorella and Spirulina companies routinely refuse to offer a COA to the public, which is unfortunate since it is the COA that the algae industry rests its case on.  In the case of cryptomonadales it is even more imperative that a COA is offered to anyone who asks for it since they claim to have created a whole new strain of algae.  Until now, they have refused to release a COA of cryptomonadales.  And just to be clear, an analysis of what nutrients are in cryptomonadales is not a COA.  A COA must  be attached to a particular batch of algae that is produced and when it was produced.

The producer does not sell cryptomonadales® Chlorella Sorokiniana in powder form, which is quite odd since many people prefer to take chlorella and Spirulina in powder form rather than tablets.  If they were to release cryptomonadales in powder form their product could be analyzed and evaluated by a third party such as the Japan Food Research Laboratories, Tokyo, Japan, one of several companies capable of conducting such an objective, independent and reliable analysis.

My opinion is that Cryptomonadales® Chlorella Sorokiniana is a combination of Chlolrella sorokiniana and Spirulina plantenis, separate powders in tablet form and not a new strain of algae as the producers claim.  Spirulina must be combined with Chlorella sorokiniana in order to bring the pheophorbides down to acceptable levels, below 60mg/100 gram.  However, we don’t know what those levels are because they won’t publish their COA.  Other than the complete array of PUFAs and PPARs (alpha, beta and gamma linenloic acids), Cryptomonadales does not have much of an advantage over other forms chlorella such as Chlorella pyrenoidosa and Chlorella vulgarius. I want to be clear that I have nothing against Cryptomonadales® Chlorella Sorokiniana.  It is a good health product to consume, but the producers are misrepresenting what it is and how it is produced.  They are being deliberately deceptive about their own product in order to sell more of their product and market it as being the latest technology and innovations in the world of health.  The truth is that this kind of deliberate misrepresentation is hurting the algae industry because it causes confusion. My question is that why is there has not been more calls from within the scientific community

I invite them to provide the world with evidence that they have indeed created a new strain of algae by combining a bacterium (Spirulina) with a plant (Chlorella).  Until now, they have offered no scientific or photographic evidence that their claims are indeed true.  Therefore, the untenable claims made by the producers of Cryptomonadales are perpetrating a hoax by claiming that they have invented a new strain of algae in my opinion.

Famous Athletes Endorse Watershed’s Natural Fitness Products

Ionized Water IS Found in Nature

One of the most common false criticisms of Ionized Water I continue to hear is that it is not found in Nature.  Therefore Viktor Schauberger would be  appalled because I compared the qualities of Ionized Water with those found in nature. They seemed to think Schamberger would be appalled because he understood nature or something. Don’t get me wrong, I’m a big fan of Viktor Schauberger and his work with energy and the properties of water.  But he knew nothing about Ionized Water and if he had, it he would have been fascinated and I’m sure approving.  Ionized Water is found in nature.  For instance, it can be found in turbulent waters such as water falls, mountain streams, ocean waves.  Hydroxyl ions form under these conditions, although they are quickly negated by positive, hydrogen ions, which are far more prevalent.

In nature, Ionized Water is most often found in mountain streams where water bounces off rocks, which results in a mild ionization effect by the creation of hydroxyl ions. The ionization of water also occurs in other places such as water falls or waves crashing onto a beach. These two natural events also create negative ions in the environment. The hydroxyls that are created under these circumstances are short-lived due to the reactive substances that surround them. They are also cancelled out by positively charged hydrogen cations. We are surrounded by active oxygen in the environment and throughout our diet, which we call free radicals.

“Ionization happens in the body as oxygen and hydrogen atoms gain or lose electrons, making them electrically charged and therefore more chemically active.”

A balanced state of health is that in which the body thrives and is most apt to operate to its capacity. However, if you change the body’s environment through poor diet, meaning foods that have been oxidized by processing or cooking, a build up of hydrogen ions results. The consequence of this is an acidic state and a low pH. To be healthy again, you need only change the environment of your body by adding alkaline substances that have an abundance of electrons such as Ionized Water and raw fruits and vegetables.

Ionized Water reflects the characteristics of raw foods in several ways:
• Ionized Water has an abundance of electrons as do raw foods.
• Ionized Water has a negative charge, or ORP, as do raw foods.
• Ionized Water possesses negative ions as do raw foods.
• Ionized Water is alkaline as are raw foods.
• Ionized Water is hydrating as are raw foods.
• Ionized Water is detoxifying as are raw foods.
• Ionized Water provides the body with ionic (organic) minerals as do raw foods.

Cooked foods have a deficit of electrons, a positive ORP and an abundance of positive ions. They are dry and dehydrating. They also acidify and add toxins to the body. All these qualities lead to disease and therefore are the exact opposite of what we should put in the body.

Ionized Water mimics many of the same attributes in nature that bring us health. And only nature can bring us true health. Vitamin and mineral supplements attempt to mimic nature although with dismal results. Medicine attempts to overcome the natural mechanisms of the body, thereby attempting to control, alter or outsmart it. Pharmaceuticals only mask symptoms of disease. No drug has yet been invented that cures the body of any disease, nor will one ever be. Pharmaceuticals never lead to health, but only allows people to hobble along a little further as they become sicker until the quality of their lives diminish to a point where the option of death is more appealing than continuing to live with such agony. True health is only found in nature. Ionized Water mimics and magnifies nature better than any substance known.

We need to approach the concept of Ionized Water with the understanding that it is a phenomenon created in nature, however, here we are able to intensify and concentrate its incredible properties. Ionized Water helps the body to flow with nature, not oppose it. This is a lesson that we are still learning in the West. Ionized Water was accepted by Asians first because it is found in nature and therefore it is a natural substance that enhances our health. At its core, Asian philosophy has tenets that readily accept the concept of Ionized Water because it is completely natural.

What can not be found in nature is purified water, distilled or reverse osmosis water. Purified water has had all the minerals removed from it, which is a substance that cannot be found in nature. When we drink purified water, we are consuming a pure chemical substance, H2O. Pure chemical substances of any kind are not found in nature collected together, but instead are always mixed with other substances.

The path to health does not lie in these artificial protocols and procedures, nor will it ever. True health is found only in nature. And Ionized Water is commonly found in nature.

Mucuna: The Greatest Longevity Herb

Mucuna is my favorite herb because it is one of the most powerful and useful herbs known. Mucuna Pruriens is an herb that contains L-Dopa, an amino acid that is often helps with neurological issues. L-Dopa helps produce dopamine in the brain, which is a mood elevator and where we get the word ‘dope’ from. More importantly, L-Dopa produces Human Growth Hormone (HGH) in the brain. HGH is the number one thing we require if we expect to remain young and vibrant, therefore it becomes increasingly important as we age. HGH is primarily produced by the pituitary gland in the brain, however, by 50 years of age the average person has stopped producing it. Angstrom Indium is useful for the pineal gland, which is itself the key to longevity.  Chlorella Growth Factor (CGF or Chlorella Extract) contains high amounts of nucleic acids that are the blue prints to the cells.  Without them, the cell cannot replicate itself properly and evermore diminished copies of our cells are produced.

Mucuna also stimulates the production of melatonin and serotonin which are both necessary for sleep regulation. These brain chemicals are also produced in the pineal gland. As we age, they are produced less and less, which is why some elderly people get up quite early in the morning and can’t go back to sleep. Brain chemicals are the key to a good night’s sleep and the keys to a youthful life at any age. I take one tablespoon of Mucuna in evening just before I go to bed because that is when the body produces HGH and other brain chemicals such as melatonin.

My hair started turning back to black about one month after I started taking it. Angstrom Copper helps with gray hair reversal as well.

FDA Warns Pharma Inc. about Irradiated Spirulina from China

I have said for years that chlorella and spirulina from China should be viewed suspiciously for several reasons.

  1. They are notoriously high in heavy metals. When Japan industrialized in the 1970’s, it was exposed to tremendous  amounts of mercury which caused mercury poisoning.  China is experiencing the same phenomena today.  And with such a large and cumbersome population, China has created one of the most polluted environments in the world.  Algae grown in this type of environment will also contain those toxins.
  2. They are notorious for presenting falsified Organic Certification when their production plants have not even been inspected.  The FDA has been aware of this problem for years and the algae industry is hurt by this falsification.  Challenging these companies on their efficacy has resulted in no changes in their illegal actions.  The Chinese government has refused to intervene to stop them.  Falsifying Organic Certification only occurs in China and has become one of the biggest problems in the algae industry.
  3. They use gigantic spray driers and produce huge amounts of Spirulina at once, harvesting only two or three times each year instead of bi-monthly.
  4. Their Spirulina and Chlorella contain so much bacteria that they are forced to irradiate it, which destroy a lot of the nutrients.

“FDA is concerned with the possible effects of the radiation on the nutrients in the food, the production of radiolytic byproducts, and the potential effect of radiation on the microbiological profile of the food. Any of these issues could raise health concerns with your irradiated products.”

Here are the things to consider when purchasing Chlorella, Spirulina or other algae.

  1. Cultivated in a controlled environment and not harvested from a lake.
  2. It should be constantly produced so it is fresh.  Many producers, especially in China, produce Chlorella and Spirulina twice a year and then store it for the rest of the year. By the time it makes it to the market it can be as much as one year old.  Freshness is obligatory when it comes to anything that has been powdered such as Spirulina, Chlorella or herbs such as Maca or Mucuna.
  3. It must be powdered immediately after being produced.
  4. Each batch must come with a Certificate of Analysis (COA).  This is nearly impossible to get from most producers.  Most resellers don’t even know what a COA is.
  5. It must be cleaned, powdered and packed in a sterile environment.

The best Chlorella and Spirulina are currently grown in Taiwan, India and Hawaii.  Be wary of anything produced in China.  The Watershed Wellness Center only sells products that come from production facilities that it has produced.

Just got done listening to a webinar with David Meerman Scott talk about his new book, Real-Time Marketing and PR. I’m a big fan of his first book, The New Rules of Marketing and PR. If you have a product of any kind, this is the marketing model you want to follow. Nothing beats marketing on the internet this way. Recently signed up with www.hubspot.com, which Scott is involved in. They have it down to a science. I follow his Twitter. David is the guru of Inbound Marketing. Call to Action, Landing Pages, Blogging, FB, etc. It’s a great concept for website marketing.

Ben & Jerry’s: The Unhealthiest Employee Benefit Ever!

I wanted to title this blog, Ben & Jerry’s: “The Dangerous Health Product Marketed as Fun and Flavor” because that’s what it is.  But to think of their employees who get to eat as much of it as they want, I reconsidered and gave it a more appropriate title.

I use to be a huge fan of Ben & Jerry’s Ice Cream back in the 80’s when they first got popular.  It was a great product with novel flavors and cool colorful packaging.  It was the first time I had ever eaten “gourmet” ice cream because now Ben & Jerry’s had made it hip.  They had come out of nowhere and now were David challenging corporate giant Häagen-Dazs ice cream for freezer space.  I liked Ben & Jerry’s so much I took my family to Vermont to see where they made it. I couldn’t believe there was such a socially conscious corporation in existence.

After I got into the health business 15 years ago I discovered how deadly dairy products are to our health, especially high fat dairy such as the kind of ice cream Ben & Jerry’s marketed.  Co-founder Ben Cohen reportedly has suffered from heart disease for more than two decades.

Now  Ben & Jerry’s Ice Cream has at long last admitted that, not only is it not “All Natural” as they have claimed since their company’s inception, but that it actually contains deadly partially hydrogenated oils better known as trans fats.  Ben & Jerry’s Ice Cream also contains alkalized cocoa, corn syrup and artificial vanilla (vanillin) or other ingredients that either don’t exist in nature or that have been chemically modified. All Natural: What a crock. Ben & Jerry are a couple of phonies, or at least the corporate giant, Unilever, these two hypocrites sold out to is. They screwed over their franchisees in various ways and many have concluded that Ben & Jerry’s has become just “another corporation”, a far cry from the “socially conscious” corporation it once was. Numerous blogs have denounced founders Ben Cohen & Jerry Greenfield as a couple of garden variety sellouts.

Ben & Jerry’s also claimed for year that their ice was bovine growth hormone, or BGH, free, which any dairy farmer will tell you is impossible to prove. So if you can’t prove it, make the claim anyway.

It’s bad enough that high fat ice cream has been marketed to the public as a relatively harmless treat, it is actually a junk-food product that contain trans fats and corn syrup, two of the worst ingredients that are commonly put into processed food that leads to disease on the fast track.  Let there be no doubt about it.  High saturated-fat foods put us at significantly higher risk of coronary heart and other vascular diseases.  Ben & Jerry’s has always maintained that at worst, their colorfully packaged product simply adds a few pounds to the midriff and that can easily be removed by exercise.  When I visited there, they stated that their employees got free gym memberships to “work off the extra pounds that their job sometimes can put on them.  My conclusion is that offering your employees all the ice cream they can eat and then give them a benefit at a gym to work off those calories.  High saturated fat ice cream, or any other animal product for that matter, is extremely dangerous to our health, which is why I have deemed it the Unhealthiest Employee Benefit Ever!

How to Avoid Deadly Trans Fats

Any oil that is partially hydrogenated should never be consumed because it contains trans fats.  It is one of the deadliest substances found in processed foods and it operates stealthily, like a cat burglar who steals your most valued possessions at night while you sleep.  The purpose of hydrogenation is to solidify the oil so that it can be made to resemble foods such as butter.  It gives processed foods the desired texture that real foods have.  Trans fats can double the size of a processed food such as a candy bar for little additional cost as well as dramatically increase the shelf life of the food.  The reason a prepackaged snack cakes are still spongy after a year of sitting on a shelf is because they contain trans fats.

It was believed for years that margarine is healthier than butter, but the discovery of the deleterious effects trans fats have on our health has called that into question.  I suggest you consume neither of them because both are quite harmful to the body in their own way.  Trans fats are in nearly all processed pre-packaged foods such as commercially sold cookies, potato chips, frozen foods, bread, dinner rolls, etc.  The average person in the US consumes 10 – 13 grams of trans fat each day.  Check the label for partially hydrogenated oil and avoid the “foods” that contain them.

In the hydrogenation process, vegetable oil is placed under high pressure with hydrogen gas at 250 – 400° F for several hours in the presence of catalysts such as nickel, platinum, aluminum[i] and other heavy metals that have been implicated in various brain diseases including bipolar and other dementia-related diseases.[ii] This process does not control where the hydrogen atoms are added to the unsaturated double bonds of the fat molecules.  Randomly adding hydrogen atoms to polyunsaturated fats converts natural food components into numerous compounds, some that had never been seen before until partially hydrogenated fats were invented.  This reveals how processing foods changes them into substances that no longer remotely resemble natural whole foods that are recognized by the body.  Trans fats have been scientifically linked to many health problems including heart disease, diabetes, obesity, atherosclerosis,[iii] immune system compromise, compromised reproduction and lactation, as well as cancer itself.[iv]

“Dr. Ancel Keys had originally claimed that the partially hydrogenated vegetable oils with their trans fatty acids were the culprits in heart disease. This was in 1958, and the edible oils industry was very swift in their squelching of that information; they shifted the emphasis to “saturated” fat and started the phony attack on meat and dairy fats.”[v]

 

Trans fatty acids are chemically altered substances in the same way that microwaved foods are chemically altered, although trans fats are much more dangerous.  Their shape does not fit the natural shape of our bodily enzymes and membrane structures, thus they do not allow the body to function naturally as it should.  The melting point of trans fats is higher (111°F), which makes them solid at both room and body temperature.  Thus they are sticky rather than liquid, which causes blood platelets to clump together.  This inability of trans fats to disperse increases the chances of a blood clot causing poor circulation, strokes and heart attacks.

Natural fat burns at 100°F.  When we bring the body temperature to 100°F or higher through exercise we burn fat.  Death occurs in humans when the body temperature rises above 109°F, thus trans fats cannot be burned by the body because their melting point is 111°F.  The only way to rid the body of trans fats is to detoxify them, which is far more difficult than simply burning them off through exercise.

Trans fats interfere with electrical conductivity in the body because of their odd shape.  They can be compared to a spark plug that has too large a gap that causes an engine to misfire.  These odd shapes that don’t belong in the body interfere with energy flow because the precise structural configurations of trans fat molecules are radically altered beyond their natural state.  This is why all drugs have side-effects and why any artificial substance we put in the body should be considered a toxin.  They are oddly shaped, deformed molecules that interfere with natural functions in the body.  Trans fats cause disease because of their unnatural molecular shapes and the drugs that are supposed to cure us only worsen our health for the same reason.

It is paramount that the molecular shape of substances we put the body match those that belong in the body.  Nothing artificial exactly matches what is found in nature at a molecular level.  The chemical formula may look the same on paper, but in reality we cannot reproduce anything exactly the way nature made it.

Trans fats interfere with the production of prostaglandin, which regulates blood pressure, kidney function, immune system response and blood clotting.  They can lead to atherosclerosis by increasing cholesterol and blood-fat levels, in part because they interfere with EFAs nutritional effectiveness in the body.  Trans fats have a tendency to collect in the brain because of its sponge-like quality.  The damage trans fats can potentially cause to the brain is immeasurable.

“The fact that trans fatty acids interfere with vital functions of essential and other highly saturated fatty acids makes their involvement in cancer likely.” [vi]

The change in a fat molecule when it is converted from a normal, healthy cis fat to a trans fat molecule is minuscule, but its negative effects on the body are profound.  Trans fats affect the permeability of the cell’s membrane, preventing certain nutrients from entering while allowing other nutrients to leak out of the cell.  The harmful effects of trans fats can be reversed in part by the natural unsaturated fat found in raw fruits, vegetable, nuts and seeds.  However, it is best to avoid them to begin with since ridding their ill effects on our body is a difficult task indeed.
